Yet Another "My Fallout 3 Doesn't Work" Question.

Hi there! I've been having some trouble getting my Fallout 3 GOTY to work right, namely that at random points in the game, the mouse and keyboard lock up and the game continues to run. I've discovered that this is because the window loses focus when Windows 7 (Ultimate N) gives me a "Fallout3.exe has stopped working" message. I look in the Error Log, and it gives me:

It seems my Fallout3.exe has some kind of problem, and it's not a dll or something like that. I've tried everything, from switching compatabilities everywhere, installing patches, I even tried a third-party fix! Nothing works. Inevitably, after a few minutes of play time, the game stops.
Interestingly enough, it seems that after doing a fresh install, the game runs fine until the next time I try and play.
I have completely updated drivers for my video card, but my sound card's driver installer is giving me trouble. This, however, is for another time. I do not feel the sound card is related to this anyway.
Please, please, PLEASE help. I can't figure out where to go next.

I got fed up and hastily installed XP. Issue's gone now, but I might reinstall 7 soon. Thanks!

Okay, XP crashed (Virus :p ) so I installed 7. Again.
I tried your fix, but it still froze every few minutes, though without the error box. It will just freeze, and I have to CAD out of it. Nothing in the Event Viewer, now.
Also, I've noticed that Oblivion does the same thing.
Any more advice? Any patches I can get?

EDIT: I read somewhere that it could be me having a dual-core processor. How do I limit to a single core in XP?
Also, it might be an audio codec, from what I've read. I lean towards this a bit more, since both applications worked fine in XP (Yes, I run them in compatability mode, before you ask) And I had two cores then.
How do I find the right codec?

Ok if you have a duel core follow these steps.

1. Open My Computer

2. Open your main drive

3. Click users/<YOUR ACCOUNT>/My Documents/My Games/Fallout3/Fallout.ini

4.Open it

5. Find these code lines

Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=1
This will limit the game to 1 core and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

Thanks! I'll try that and see if it helps.
What about Oblivion? I looked in the .ini for that line, but it wasn't there.

How about cooling in your PC? Does it happen after you've been playing for awhile? I know some games will make my video card fan run faster because of the graphics.

Have you checked all your fans to ensure they are working properly? Do you have the proper air flow through your case? Does this happen with any other graphic intensive games?

I have a dual-core processor and I haven't had any problems, although I don't have the GOTY edition. I purchased the regular version through Steam.

Also, are you doing ANY overclocking of any kind (CPU, GPU)? Also, there was a time where nVidia cards were having problems with the drivers. I can't remember what version is was at the time and I don't know if that problem was ever resolved?

My video card is an ATI HD3870 and it runs fine on High settings. Ultra worked fine as well, but the frame rate was pretty bad.

No. It's not a cooling problem, I'm sure of that.

Oblivion Settings to tweak !
---------------------------------
Multi-core CPU tweaks

If you have a Dual/Quad core Processor or a processor with Hyper-Threading, then set these values to this:

bUseThreadedBlood=1 (default 0)
bUseThreadedMorpher=1 (default 0)
bUseThreadedTempEffects=1 (default 0)
bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1 (default 0)
iNumHavokThreads=3 (default 1)
bBackgroundPathing=1 (default 0)
bUseBackgroundFileLoader=1 (default 0)
iThreads=10 (default 3)

Otherwise leave them at the default.

Fallout 3 Settings to tweak !
------------------------------------
Tell me if it works or not ALSO set your window size to 600x800 with low graphics settings and play with your case open (to test if airflow / overheating is the issue)

Didn't work. Inputs still froze up after a few minutes, and it didn't overheat.
I tried Windows XP mode, but that simply wasn't fast enough, and a pain to set up.

Windows XP mode will not work for games because there is no 3D acceleration. Instead, right click on the icon and go to properties. From there, go to the compatibility tab and select XP SP3 and see if that helps.

Otherwise, I wonder if something is wrong with the video card or your memory?

No, the only way they run at all is through compatibility mode. Nothing is wrong with my video card or hardware, because both games worked perfectly under Windows XP.

Fallout 3 is listed as one of the games that runs faster under windows vista. Try running under native win7

I know that I don't have fallout 3 playing under compatibility mode and it runs just fine. So, I'm not sure what the issue is then.

What are your system specs? I've noticed those haven't been posted. Video card, cpu, motherboard, etc.

Looking at your display card, first off it appears you have just 256mb of memory on your card, which means it will be using another 768MB of your system memory.

I know with the youGamers website, it states that the recommended card is a 3800 series which means you're slightly below the recommended chipset. The website you can go to to test to see if your machine can run the game is at:

http://www.yougamers.com/gameometer/10291/

How high of a detail are you trying to run the game at? Have you tried setting it to the lowest resolution and graphical settings and then see if it's stable that way? If so, start bumping up the resolution first and then the details.

Yes, I have run it at the lowest settings. According to systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest, I can run it just fine.
EDIT: According to the site you recommended, I can run it well over the specifications, except for my video card. Yet, if this were the case, why doesn't Oblivion run either?

Just your mouse and keyboard freezing but the game continues you say?

Fairly common problem with Bethesda's recent games, Oblivion and Fallout 3.

You can see all that I have tried here for Oblivion (same engine, same issues) : http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1...

Try disabling music in the .ini and see if that fixes it. In Oblivion it was bmusicenabled=1 change it to 0 and save.

It most likely has to do with codecs. Do you have any codec packs on your computer?

I do not think I have any installed. At least, I haven't installed any myself. Or is VLC a codec?

no, VLC isn't a codec.

Try downloading the "Full" version of the K-Lite Codec pack here: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

See if that solves your problem.

You say your having this same issue of the mouse/keyboard freezing in Oblivion as well?

Have you tried disabling music in the .ini ?

edit: Oh, and re-reading your OP you said your sound card might not be the issue, but it very well could be. Oblivion has some odd problems with sound/input freezing like you are getting. What sound card do you have?

Try also updating the drivers for your sound card if you haven't already.

What is the chipset for your motherboard? Is appears to be an nVidia nForce. Do you know what model nForce it is? Have you gone to the nVidia site and downloaded their latest drivers? Usually, they also include the latest audio drivers for their onboard audio which is what it appears you are using.

My motherboard is old (ASUS A8NE) which is an nForce4 chipset and I've been running Fallout 3 and Oblivion without a hitch. I did download and use nVidia's latest drivers (which is for Vista64 - they don't have any Windows 7 64 drivers).

Hmm.... I could have sworn there was something about the nForce chipset that had issues with something, and I could have sworn it was something with FO3 and Oblivion... but that isn't much help.

Have you done what I suggested yet? It's very often a codec issue with these situations, or your registry got ****ed. Did you mess with your registry at all?

That's interesting. I wonder what nForce chipset has the issues? I'll have to look into that, but I've had my nForce4 Ultra for about 3 years and Oblivion hasn't had any issues nor has FO3.

I have a similar problem, just fresh installed xp on a clean drive and am trying to load FO3. It installed fine and upon clicking 'play' from the launcher I receive a black screen then it responds with an error message saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close. I've looked for the past two days for a solution but have yet to find one, any assistance would be nice :]

The OP has not responded for six months, you'd be better off starting a new thread of your own.
