Hi, I am in need am a secondary computer as the older ones are dying one by one. I have been looking at the ECS K7S5A motherboard with a Thoroughbred XP 2000+.

My concern regards the SiS735 chipset on the motherboard and how it "reacts" combined with sb!live, nVidia card, Amd cpu, etc. I have throughout the times had extreme difficulties combining these components with the VIA chipset (<kt266) and I have friends experiencing the same with some SiS chipset, which model I can't recall. Another of the zillion reasons I stick to Intel myself, currency at this present state does not allow it though.

The board will run with Sd-Ram for now btw.

As this pc HAS to work from day one, I really do not have the patience nor the time for RMA. So I am asking for your advicement and oppinions on the matter.

Thank you for reading.

Yours Sinful, Mopeygoth

Friend has one of those boards.

Runs 512 Major PC133. SB card. ATI 9000 Pro. AMD 2200+ XP.
Runs fine with cheap PC3200 memory too.

After some initial self reboots the system has settled down and seems to be stable.

Winmodem seems not to work though; even on a new windows 98 Install. (Haven't heard back from ECS tech support though but what do u want for a $45 Mobo).

735 has no compatability issues I know of, unlike the KT266. If your friend has problems, it could be caused by a number of things, including IRQ sharing, bad power, or a faulty board.

Cool, I am glad to hear =).

I suppose winmodem is a modem issue... that's okay we will just stick to our 2mbit-line ;). I will make sure it's a 300w psu that is installed in this nifty cooling case http://www.midtdata.dk/indexmereinfo.asp?model=6066-CA,
I even did that for the old PII-375... it loved it! ;). Then again she runs with three graphiccards, three hdd and a number of fans other other pci-cards :).

The processor I had in mind is the:
Athlon Thoroughbred XP 2000+ (1666MHz) Box Socket A / FSB 266MHz

Since it's my girlfriend pc it really has to be 100% stabile running 24/7. I am so tierd of her bitching about it being soooo slow, crashing, acting up... girls' have no patience when it comes to PCs, tsk tsk.

Thanks a lot to you all!

it was < than the kt266. I just read somewhere ages ago that that specific chipset where were the sb!live/geforce compatibility was fixed... I see they were not ;). It was an Epox MVP3C2, I was to borrow it as I thought by PII had died.. very fustrating as the gamer with a shiny new GeFrorce2pro and an sb!live player 1024 with no pc to settle in :-D. That was when my troubles with VIA began, I had at that time also another VIA pc in, 800mhz beast of some kind (the top notchwas 1,2ghz at the time) with the same problems. Ever again they both randomly rejected some cards, overheated like hell and windows crashed all the time displaying random blue screens.

Well.. so much for VIA stories now, cya
