Here's my challenge. A friend of mine wants me to build her a PC from the ground up. She's fed up with her old Pentium 200MMX, 2.1GB HDD and 64MB EDO RAM, 4MB AGP, 14" Monitor. She says she can only fork out between 375-425Euros.

She wants between 1500-1800Ghz Processor, at least 30GB HDD,
256 MB DDR, a good GPU and a 17" Monitor. A new keyboard and maybe an optical mouse wouldn't be bad. Can anyone do it? I won't profit from this I know. She's a good friend.

If it's not a gaming PC then following things should be good.

CPU: Athlon XP 2600+ (333 MHz FSB)
Mobo: ABIT NF7-M
RAM: 1 x 256 MB Kingston PC2700 CL2.5 DDR
GPU: Integrated GeForce4 MX
HDD: 80 GB Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 753 DFX

If she can spend some extra money for another 256 MB RAM stick, then it will greatly improve IGP 3D performance and not to mention, 512 MB should be useful for everything.

If Athlon XP 2600+ is too expensive, then you can buy AXP 2400+. Though it doesn't have 333 MHz FSB or 512k L2 cache, it's 2.0 Ghz clockspeed often makes it better than AXP 2500+

I've got the 2400+. Are you telling me that it's better than the 2500+Barton?

In games, 2500+ Barton is slightly better. At most apps except games, they're nearly equal or 2400+ is better

You mean the Samsung SyncMaster 753 DFX. I researched it last night and it's even better than my Fujitsu. The Logitec keyboard and optical mouse shouldn;t be a hard bargain to find.

the main question - what's da budjet?
the aftamath question - what's da PC will be used for?
the lastest question - when does she need it?

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

what is the doller amount? (I am not into Euro stuff)
anyway, if it is one 2 one then you can find parts according to prices to get into the sum:

70 mobo, 50 CPU, 50 mem, 70 HD, 20+ Case, 80 vid, 120 monitor, and the rest you can get from old PC.

these are the approximate values, but they are real and will give you a very nice machine for few years to go. just match them with whatever you can find, the cheaper the better.

PS: I did not specify any brand, caz there are lots of them, and in Europe they are probably different than here, so you chooze what ever you think is right, you know the drill.

if you like to be specific the system i am using now as my kid's "gaming machine" is as follows when I bought it a year ago, so prices are much lower now.

ePoX 8RDA - 98 (first board that did not give me any issues for year's usage)
Crucial 256MB - 50
XP 1700+ - 58
GF MX400 - got it free (now around 50)
IBM 80Gig - 100
Dell 17 inch - got it free (now - 130)

Total spent - 340 (with tax)

rest of the stuff I pulled out of old PC and walla, can play any gamez/muviz with very good resoz/framerates. don't spend more than you need, it will not give her any gain that she would see or "feel", but money will be lost.

it was not available yet at that time. 8RDA does all I need and more than I expected. I do not have one hardware part that does not work on it, none, even 5 years old MX300 sound works on it as it was built for it ;)
