I have a P4G8X motherboard and want to upgrade. I have my P4 3.06 533MHz that I want to put in it. All I read about now is mobo's running the 800MHz CPU's, anyone know of the best mobos made for the P4 at 533MHz (for a gaming system). No overclocking will be done unless I want to change the FSB to see if I can get better performance (but keep the same CPU speed). All help appreciated. :)

If you have pc3200 memory, I would get an 865pe board such as the abit Is7 and do some overclocking. I would try for 166 fsb on your cpu, which would put your memory at 400 speed using the 4:5 ratio.

I think you have a good setup with the P4G8X and the P4 3.06.
Personally I would keep that system as is and wait to build an entirely new system based on the upcoming Prescot core cpu.

increasing the fsb proportionatly increases the cpu's speed...unless you run a mem divider which is unadvisable on a dual channel mobo.

The best memory for a 533 bus P4 is RDRAM. PC1066 and RIMM4200 operate at the same speed.

My 3.06 is not performing as such. No doubt it is due to my lack of skill with computers. My idea was to increase the FSB and decrease the multiplier, but the multiplier is locked so I can't do anything. I payed a ton for this CPU, yes I was very new to building computers (still am, but I now have more expierence than then), so I want to use it for as long as possible to its fullest potential. Perhaps turning off hyperthreading will allow me to change the multiplier....

I just really want to make what I payed for it worth it for another year or two. 6 months is not enough.

If the asus mobo has all the features you currently need, you won't see a big performance increase with a new mobo. The multiplier is locked, unless you have an engineering sample, which is rare. How high you can overclock depends alot on the quality of your memory. If you don't have pc3200 or higher memory, you might want to put your money into that instead of a new board.

Currently I have DDR266 with dual channel. I want to upgrade to one of the last ones (best ones) made for the P4 533 cause it'll be cheaper than those made for the P4 800, and better than mine. I figure it will incorporate DDR400 with dual channel. Now, are you saying DDR400 with dual channel and perhaps with a Radeon 9700 PRO or higher (opposed to my Ti-4600 now) will not perform better than my current system? Will the DDR400 not be a good upgrade that will increase performance, let alone increase teh performance of a AGP upgrade?

Your current board already runs in dual mode, and has agp 8x support. You won't find a faster board unless you upgrade to the 865, 875, or 655fx. You'd be wasting your money on another 533 board. But the memory and video upgrades will give you a decent performance boost on your current board. If your 4600 runs all your games without any problems, you might try the memory upgrade first. My generic pc3500 is running very stable in dual mode at 400 speed, and was only $76 shipped for 2 256 meg sticks. The board I use has the same chipset as the p4g8x.
