Are there any reviews out there on any of these boards? I was looking into the Asus P4R800-VM but don't know much about it. If they're NFG then I'll probably go for the Abit IS-10.

Thanks, Spitfire. One has to wonder if rage3d.com is a bit biased toward ATI so I read the review with a grain of salt. The one thing they don't mention is overclockablility. With a P4 platform this is a MUST. Also I'm sure time will tell if the ATI mobos are truly stable or have some hidden glitches like VIA based boards. For now I think I'm gonna go for the IS-10.

I don't think you want to use it's integrated graphics. People who doesn't need integrated graphics should have no reason to buy R9100 IGP based mobos. It's slower than Springdale and I don't think it overclocks better (because I haven't seen non-Intel chipsets overclock better than Intel)

Hey Ryan. I've been well, thank you. I'm always busy but I usually check in to THGC daily. Mostly I'm looking for Wingding's comments in the Other section. I'm in the process of building a little LAN/entertainment system. I've narrowed it down to the following:

P-4 2.4, 2.6 or 2.8 (whatever I can get my hands on)
Cooler Master CA-ATC620B
Abit IS-10
512MB Kingston HyperX PC3500 CL2
Maxtor 160GB SATA
Fortron 530W PSU
DVD-+RW (Not sure what brand yet. Lite On?)

The only thing I don't know about is the vid card. I was thinking of just dropping a 9100 in there and then if I use it for a LAN I'd swap in my 9700 PRO. That's my story. If anybody has any other suggestions then I'm all ears.

As far as the DVDRW I'll pass on some learn the hard way info, get one that covers all formats so you can do whatever you want in the long run, DVD-R&RW, DVD+R&RW, make absolutely positive it has Buffer Underun Protection capabilities, and its a 4X burner, now when you start looking for writing media not all set top DVD players will play the DVD+R media, that was the lesson learned the hard way because my DVD Player will not play the DVD+R, but the DVD-R works just fine in my machine and its worked in 3 other Players, with no problems at all, so DVD-R writing media is the way to go, but you still would need to test to be on the safe side. Hope this little bit of pass on info helps out some in your decision making processes.

Something to consider is a disturbing review that has soured my view on the IGP 9100 a bit (initial reviews look good all around).

It appears that the memory controller isn't a good as it could be and the performance of nV add-in cards is a noticeably lower than on other boards. Seems strange, and perhaps a BIOS fix might help, but not sure. If it's for casual lanparty gaming it should be ok, but if you're serious then perhaps another solution might give you better performance in that arena. You may need 2 seperate cards if you want good 2 role performance. This is still a good entry level mobo, but not a good choice if you are relying on something to make the most of the R9700Pro.

Here's a review from Xvit labs that soured my view;

<A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/chipsets/display/ati-igp9100.html" target="_new">The Review</A>

<A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/chipsets/display/ati-igp9100_9.html" target="_new">The part that made me pause</A>

Strangely <A HREF="http://www.accelenation.com/?ac.id.210.1" target="_new">the Accelernation review</A> show different result;

<A HREF="http://www.accelenation.com/?ac.id.210.9" target="_new">Here's their ADD-IN tests</A>, but this time with an R9700PRo like you want to add.

and then here's a bunch of other reviews, which are mainly positive (a few looks at OCing) ;

Actually you missed DVD-RAM, but then again if BC isn't archiving or making a good back-up CD then it's of little help. I have an LG SuperMulti in my video-editing rig, and I like it, but it is supposedly considerably slower than others out there. But hey it cost me $149CDN (I paid more for my CD burner a year ago! and only $20 less for my Pioneer Slot loading CD-ROM!). :eek: ]

Maximum PC has a review of the replacement of my drive my drive, the 4040 (mine's a 4020), and the new 8X Plextor (don't know the actual name, my copy of the mag is on my desk at work), which they loved. Also I think TDK also introduced a new 8X DVD burner. I don't need the speed just the reliablity and versatility.

However DVD-RAM is definitely not for everybody, and the DVDs are significantly more expensive than both sets of the other formats.

For read and write SPEED go with the Plextor it seems.

I've read the tweaktown article yesterday. They've included a Radeon 9200SE for comparison. I've claimed before, the IGP seriously sucks compared to real R9100. It can't beat even R9200SE everytime. How can you tell that it's better than nForce2 IGP? nForce2 IGP never gets beaten by GeForce4 MX420. Both R9100IGP and nForce2 IGP is not fast enough for many the DX8 games, so DX8 support/no support doesn't matter.

The only real advantage R9100 IGP has, it's ability to use IGP as second video card afer a discrete video card

Thanks, GGA. It helps a lot, but I had just put my order in last night. The difference in price between the Asus P4R800V and the Abit IS-10 is about $6. However, if I can only get a little over 100MHz overclock on the ATI-based boards and I can get a 600MHz overclock with the 865G-based board then I'm ahead of the game even if I add an expensive video card. BTW, I found a 9500 Pro for $179 with free shipping. I'll try the 9700 Pro mod and if it doesn't work I'll still have a helluva card.

As far as the DVD-RW/+RW goes I ordered the Sony DWU14ABK. It was the only black one they had at the warehouse.

You can consider LiteOn LWD-811S instead of Sony DVD burner. It's 8x dual format and costs only $150
