Hi all,
I have located a cd rom drive to replace the failed one in my friends
notebook (Presario 1235). I haven't taken a good look at it yet because the
notebook currently not at my house but is this a repair I can tackle myself?
Any obvious snags I should be aware of?
Tia for any info.

Pretty much all laptops have hotswapable cdrom drives. That one however might be old enough to not have employed hotswap yet. In that case you will have a whole lot of fun Can it be done? yes. Will it involve taking apart a large amount of the laptop? probably.
If that thing isnt hotswappable clear a nice big area on your floor and get a bunch of dishes to keep track of the screws I had to replace the cdrom in an old IBM thinkpad that didn't have hotswappable cdroms and I literally had to take out every single component to get at the cdrom. Hopefully that compaq is a tad easier.
Compaq's naming system can often be a bit eratic, but if that is a presario 1200 series (that employs either a celeron or Pentium III from 500-900MHz) then the CD-ROM is actually quite easy to get to...
Ah... but I just checked on the compaq website. That's quite an ancient notebook?! AMD K6 233MHz, 4GB HDD and 24x CD-ROM drive. It might be quite difficult to get to, and with old technology like that compatibility *might* be an issue. I doubt it though. If you can work your way around with a screw driver, you should be able to replace the drive without any problems...
