Bad Company 2 Beta Your Thoughts

Yesterday I picked up my copy of the Bad company 2 beta. I overall liked alot of things but i felt a little disappointed. The first thing that I noticed was the graphics. To me they didnt look that good. I felt like I was playing battlefield 2 all over again. I had the in game settings set as high as they go on 1920x1200 and 8xaa. When I watched the video of the single player mission in the jungle village I was blown away by the graphics. this level not so much maybe cuz its snow? I also felt like the guns looked bad and they were too high up on the screen. A good example is the M9 its almost at the top of the screen lol. My last disappointment was no prone. Everytime i would snipe i always wanted to go prone and couldnt. I felt exposed just being able to crouch.

What do you guys think about the beta so far??

Best solution

LOVED IT!!!

Played it all last night. I think that it looks a little dull because it is a snow map so there is a lack of color and foliage (running at 1900x1080 all high and 4xAA). Also the blum effects kinda blurr the screen a bit. The game does need prone, but I believe Dice said they will be adding that later to the PC version only. The destructable envirement gets pretty crazy nothing like being held up in a building defending yourself when the whole building colapses on you. I can't wait to get the full game and try the other game modes, maps and unlocks.

BTW F*&% MW2

They have already had one minor patch.

You should be able to go into the control options and change the talk buttons.

God I wish they would release another map for beta or at least another game mode. This game is freaking SICK!!! MARCH 2 needs to come faster :)

I broke down and canceled my amazon order and hooked up with Steam for a beta key. This game is pretty good so far. Just after one night, I am addicted to it.

My favorite part of it is that it feels responsive like BF2 but keeps the faster pace combat of 2142. I also really like the sound improvement. It is so realistic now it really helps to suck you deeper into the game.

I like how they took the knife out of the inventory and made it a melee. At first I was like...ahh, it is COD deja vu but it is so much more responsive than switching to it as a weapon as you had to do in the previous BF's. I also like how the animation feels like the knife stabs something rather than the pansy slashes that never seem to connect in BF2/2142. It is almost the exact same knifing as COD now but I think it is a good improvement. People may complain about this but it is easier to knife now.

The same goes for the frags. Much more responsive now that you don't have to select them first.

An odd thing I noticed was that the medic kit gets the big support gun. It just seems so odd compared to 2142 and BF2 where the medics had the lighter guns. For the first night playing, I was forgetting that I was a medic and was throwing out med packs as if they were ammo. :heink:

This is probably a beta thing but the mouse scrolling would not invert for me. I think also that the scrolling through the weapons to select them is still a bit awkward. I wish FPS would just adopt the Crysis suit selection mechanics. Oh well :??:

Strangly, Rush is a good gametype; a good mix of BF2 and CS:S really. Hard for attackers to win, although I've seen well organized teams pull it off...Might just be the map though...

Weapons need to be re-balanced, ASAP; all guns are far too accurate at range by default (Engineers should NOT be able to hit snipers across the map...).

Combining kits was a great idea, as it cuts down on some of the clutter that plauged BF2. Medic and Support got combined, as did Spec-ops and Sniper and AT and Engineer. Should open up matches to some more exotic weapon combos...

Anyone who's played a BF game should be able to step right in. I'm calling FPS of the year.

I think being able to knock walls down really helps for the attackers. It helps open up spots where defenders can camp the entire game so that the attacking team can move in. I am finding that the destructible environment actually helps move game play along where there isn't too much of the stale mates where two teams get stuck at a certain point on the map.

I agree with the weapons. The assault and engineer guns seem to have a pretty long range despite their iron sights. It feels like they also have the same damage. I like how they are actually useful though. In 2142, the base weapons were all absolute crap and there was no reason to use them once you got an upgrade. It also made it hard to get a leg up in the game vs anyone with an unlock. Hopefully that is a little better in BC2 but we will have to wait for that one.

^^ To be fair, those classes weren't meant for combat. I personally liked the fact Engineer/AT couldn't go on massive kill streaks, as those were specialty kits. Heck, BF2 Special Forces was worth the purchase just for the P-90, which made the AT kit usable as a combat class...

At least the engineer kit is limited to 20 shots per clip, but you get teh SCAR-L WAY to early...I'd argue its easier to hit a target with ironsights then it is with a sniper rifle at this point...
Score

Yeah I was actually using the engineer kit as an assault kit last night. It is pretty lethal right now so you can just run around and pop everyone pretty easily. Like you said, the only limiting factor with it is that it has a small clip. I wouldn't be surprised if they back the dps down on that one.

I miss my claymores for the sniper though. Are those unlocks now? I haven't looked into the unlock tree yet. Also...they really need to get the prone going. The fancy pantsy ghillie suits are a waste if you can't lay low.

I like the removed prone; After years of dealing with air-prone in BF2, I don't miss the lack of prone one bit. Besides, it helps kill the camp-crowd, which is always a good thing.

Love this game, been playing the beta for a few days and I already have about 800 kills, I have heard that the final game will ship with much better textures (they were removed to help lower the overall size of the beta download)

Also, it runs great in Dx11, all maxed out 1920x1200 4xAA 16AF I am getting anywhere from 60-100 fps in game, and there will probably be some optimizations in the form of a patch, or in the actual retail release.

So, who wants to get a small clan/squad setup for March 2 ???

I know from experiance that eventually, people start to get on eachothers nerves; hence the reason I'm semi-retired from competitive gaming. BC2 looks to be the game that might convince me to return though. I REALLY like what I see.

After my second night of playing, I think this game is better than BF2 and 2142. I know for sure that I won't go back and play 2142 or BF2 now that I can play bad company.

I think Dice did a perfect job on updating the mechanics but still having it feel like a battlefield game. Their intent was to go after the COD market and I think the definitely will with this one. I can't wait to see the other maps that come out.

Fatal...you think the knifing is hard? It is Mickey mouse knifing compared to 2142 and BF2. I can foresee some BF knifing experts complaining about it because it is too easy now.

I for one am proof that CS:S skills (or lack thereof :p ) don't really matter in BF...

The biggest problem of my group is we spent almost 5 years competitng together, and we're pretty much scattered at this point. I'm trying to get the core group back on its feet though. I know most of us plan to get the game on release anyway, and if I can get enough people, we'll probably join the first TWL competition ladders...[Fun fact: Our clan [WGT] finished first in the first TWL 5v5 ladder for CoD:MW. Too bad we stunk at the game :D ]. I'll get back to you in a few days to see whats going on with my main group...

And yes Spinach, the weapon wheel is backward...I need to change my keys at some point.

Well, I am good at every online fps I play, was just using css as an example, because no matter how skills in css translate to other games, I don't think there is any doubt that it might be one of the hardest games to actually get good at.

My MW2 KDR is about 2.5, I have never played any BF games seriously though, so I am sure there is a learning curve, my kdr in the beta is 1.32 but I have just been dicking around alot, and getting used to everything.

I'm not trying to brag, I'm just saying that I think we should get a clan going, and I think I can help add, not take away.

Eh, I was more the commander in BF2. I was the guy which went 12-12 in competition matches, but made sure everyone knew what they we doing, how/where to attack, etc. Of course, there was the odd round I would go 24-6...I was more fit for CAL [which includes light vehicles] instead of TWL [infintry only], due to me being the top AT player in BF2 [and no, I am not bragging; I was the BF2 AT guru :D ]. Too bad private server stats dont' get logged, as I probably had well in excess of 50,000 kills with the AT gun...

And trust me, I've seen some damn good players; but the BF series is also about squad movement, postiting, and the like. Nothing stuck more then getting stuck in your uncap at Sharqi/Karkand...

I claim a BF2 k/r of about 1 [it swings a lot between .8 and 1.2], but my command skills made up for that shortcomming. The CoD [any] K/R...lets not go there. :D

The other big change is the ability to spawn on anyone in your squad. This REALLY pressures the defense in a compeitition match, as if forces players to stay back and defend as opposed to go and try to block opponents in their spawn.

In BF2, you learned very quickly who the Squad Leader was, and made sure his location was known at all times. As long as he lived, the attack lived on. Now, every single squad member has that same ability. I already forsee competition matches where fortunes swing in a short minutes time. The defense can't play too far back, otherwise the attackers are always on point, yet the defense can't move up, for fear of letting someone through.

As a commander for so many years, I'm already imagining the types of strats I could implement...

You know what...that is a big change but I forgot about it. I like how you can select the person and see what is going on before you spawn so you can be like...that dude its toast...F that. I think it good because sometimes you get an idiot of a squad leader that can't position for sh*t and your entire squad had to suffer from it. This way, it is easier to spawn into position for defense and offense.

Playing on pc only play fps on pc also not a fanboy. I realize its a beta however beta is pretty close to final release. Obviously we will get many more levels etc. But so far I think it is mediocre at best they may surprise me and I truly hope they do. As it would be nice to have a current game with dedicated servers that MW2 is lacking. However without major improvements COD 4 beats this.

I fell into the hype that this was going to be amazing which I think is what the PC community wants since they feel ripped off by MW2 lack of dedicated servers, mods etc. Unfortunately without a lot of changes and improvements I dont see it.

How confused are you on the definition of "beta"? beta is not usually close to the final release, it is a public testing of an unfinished product. But instead of paying 400 people to test it for them, they released it to the people who preordered. and this already beats cod 4, 5, and 6.

I got the Beta free thankfully as I would be worried it would be money wasted if I had pre-ordered. Again I look forward to the final release and reading reviews and players overall feel of it at that point and it may surprise me. It may also be that its a bad overall level and therefore extremely limiting how good the game is.

As far as this already beating cod 4,5 & 6. Its a Beta and no it doesn't yet maybe it can but not yet. My honest feeling is most people opinions are clouded and are over rating this game out of hatred for IW's choices surrounding COD MW2 and while I agree that those choices sucked and its frustrating for numerous reasons. Dedicated servers alone don't make it an amazing or great FPS.

So hopefully EA will take everyone's suggestions and make this a great game for all to enjoy I just feel like overall alot will be disappointed with the final product also.

What don't you like about it? I am asking your honest opinion because this game was made to take on the COD series and I notice that it adopted a few mechanics from it. There will be a ton of BF vs COD debates when it rolls out...you thought Crysis vs COD4 was bad....

I played BF before COD so that does bias my opinion towards BF but the servers have nothing to do with it. I prefer the organized squad play and think there is better teamwork and more tactical attack/defend planning in BF than in COD. However, I thought the single player part of COD4 was amazing...very fully of great cinematic cut scenes and awesome lighting effects. BF never had a single player aspect to the game so I think that their attempt to put one in this game will flop because that isn't what BF is about.
