486 motherboard question (I'm serious here!)

K... I'm building up a PC (slowly) as a sort of Frankenstein project. I have an FIC PIO-2 486 motherboard and an AMD 5x86 133 processor (raw processor, not as an "upgrade" chip). Right now, it has 128MB RAM, and intel 10/100 NIC, and a couple of 4.3GB drives. What I want to do over time is see what would happen if I added some "modern" components to this rig and ran Win98SE and Linux on it. The plan is to add either a PCI GeForce or Radeon to it as well as an ATA133 controller, a couple of ATA133 or 100 drives, and USB to the machine.

My question: do any of you think that a Radeon or GeForce will work on this board? I'm not really worried about the ATA controller, that should simply work. Same for USB, though USB will probably be useless with anything more than a game controller.

Think of this project as an extension of Tom's 65 CPU test. Though he mentioned the 486, he didn't test one.

  1. It should work...pci is a standard i really dont see why not. But still its stupid :).

    If it isn't a P6 then it isn't a procesor

  2. I know. But it's not as stupid as the guy that ultra-super cooled his 486 (with a small freezer no less), overclocked it and ran Half-Life on it.

Everyone's entitled to one stupid project to get themselves Slashdotted.

  3. I'm not sure your bios on an 486 will recognize any HD larger than 1 gig, you may have to partition them

when all is said and done, what you've done for your neighbor is most important
  4. Can you still get a PCI graphics card lol? Look for a Voodoo 3 card for that machine.
Best overall car around that time line. To bad Nvidia purchased Voodoo....It would have been very interesting to see what kind of graphics cards Voodoo would have for us gamers in today's market.

However Voodoo sealed its fate when they introduced a Voodoo5 they said was a fully functional AGP card when in fact all it did was ride the AGP slot but had ZERO agp capabilities.
They lied and the company died...Leave it to a Texan to promote something as more then it is. It moo's it moo's it has to be a Cow.

  5. That wasnt the big problem...plus at the time there was not need for the bandwith of agp...

Mainly voodoo's problem is they were doing what nvidia is doing now...

Dude, 3DFX was dead for YEARS befor nVidia bought them, had nVidia NOT bought them they'd still be dead.
