A landmark agreement between Washington and Canberra will see Australia host a permanent US military presence as troops engage in increased training and joint firing exercises.

Whats the Aussie sentiment about all this?

Maybe Obama is a big fan of the Mad Max movies and he is just worried about your well being. Who would run barter town, besides 2500 marines.......?

It seems to me to be a passive aggressive display at China.
November 16, 2011 2:20:29 PM

How awesome for a President who ran his campaign promising to bring the troops home.

No, let's spread them out even more around the globe, yeah, great strategy. Way to go Zero!

If they aren't engaged in combat I don't see the problem. I didn't think Australians needed the help though. But again Im calling a show of strength or a way of showing China they arent dominant.
November 16, 2011 4:28:49 PM

The Aussies aren't intimidating enough already?
November 16, 2011 4:34:52 PM

Maybe Rey is Paul Hogan.
November 16, 2011 4:40:22 PM

Yeah, i'm a big guy but Dundee intimidates the hell out of me. Especially when he's on walkabout'. :)
November 16, 2011 5:44:18 PM

Well go US!

:pfff:
November 16, 2011 5:58:04 PM

As long as Australia is okay with it and were not there to start a war I don't see any problems. I bet the soldiers that go there actually would love it. I would love to visit Australia. =)
November 16, 2011 7:09:04 PM

I bet those wild joeys may go radical on us....
November 17, 2011 4:55:09 AM

I think their presence in Darwin is good.

Darwin has a small population so their presence will boost the local economy.

Unless the troops gets everything they need from cargo from USA.
November 17, 2011 5:28:57 AM

Stuff? From the US?
November 17, 2011 10:46:54 AM

Wait till they try a Darwin Stubby !!

That's not the point. The point is that Obama has promised to "bring the troops home".

Of course, he also promised the most transparent administration in history, to close Gitmo, and no lobbyists in the government.
November 17, 2011 1:39:06 PM

If he ran for Prime Minister down here he would clean up ... his ability in front of a crowd is second to none. Even though the US is doing it tough he is projecting your country (to external audiences ) to be confident and forward looking.

That is important in the international arena.

As far as the world is concerned Australia is just some fly on the arse of the camel ... so hey ... our voice is a small one.

Unless your talking cricket, rugby, swimming, and ... we are not doing well in any of them at the moment either.

No I think several people here have villanized the current administration. Since no one can do any good besides the people you adore then stop talking about it. Just let it go and let us get back to a forum with some lightheartedness to it.

We know you're point so stop making it in EVERY THREAD ON THIS SITE!!! Its getting old. Unless you have something new to add to the conversation I would really appreciate a tone down of the rhetoric.
November 17, 2011 1:53:23 PM

I think you should tone down your asking for a tone down in the rhetoric. :)

But seriously. Pointing out hypocrisy and outright lies is NOT rhetoric.
November 19, 2011 10:38:29 AM

I am going through all of the negative threads and closing them.

On a positive note ... would you guys support us as the 51st State?

We were planning on dumping the UK anyway ... as we are sick of paying them taxes when they don't do anything but bleed us dry.

We have had a massive influx of pommy immigrants.

My local watering hole ... "The Chase" is full of them.

If I hear another soccer chant or conversation about the heat and the flies here I am going to stuff a goanna up someone's jumper !!

November 19, 2011 2:08:05 PM

Annex Australia NOW! I'm in full support.
November 19, 2011 9:46:38 PM

No.

Be more like Singapore.

Encourage smart people to have children.

Put resource into research and technology industry.

Build a dozen aircraft carrier and a fleet of sub and stealth jet to form fleets.

All using renewable energy.

Non-intervention policy.

Keep the weapons for pure defensive use.

I was thinking more along the lines of the US becoming the 7th state of Australia actually. Or perhaps they'd prefer just to be a territory?* :kaola:

*This might be easier anyway, because we won't have to merge all 50 states into one.
November 20, 2011 3:25:12 AM

Steady on ... I aim for us to compete with Texas !!

We should shove them into a state with New Zealand.

Deep philosophical thought there. :)

November 20, 2011 12:13:44 PM

There is no planned cut to defence spending here.

We have already committed to the new ships, planes, JSF, and beefed up ODF.

We need to sink those horrible collins class subs and get into some decent attack class subs like the Virginia's ... 12 of them would be ideal.

I recently finished watching "The Pacific" series concerning the Marines combat in the Pacific theater during WW2. Seems that shortly after Guadalcanal, the Marine divisions got some R&R in Australia, which apparently was greatly appreciated by both the Marines and all the Aussie women whose men were off fighting elsewhere :p . According to the producers, that was the first and last time the Marines got such a nice place for relaxation - all the rest were pretty much uninhabited but secured islands..

Obviously you've never been on a Marine camp or Army or Air Force base or Naval station :p . The PX (Post Exchange) is pretty much a department store, hair cuttery, liquor store, etc all rolled into a couple or 3 buildings. At the overseas PX's you can buy generally anything from a new car to gas around 1/3rd of what the local economy charges, depending on the country. Or at least you could 25 years ago..

November 21, 2011 7:16:42 PM

Isn't most of the wildlife in Australia capable of killing a person.

Something like 9 of the 10 most poisonous spiders, plethora of deadly snakes, kangaroos that will split you open, koalas, duck billed platypus, sea monsters, the kraken, master blaster, spiders that kill birds.

Best place to train to stay alive.

IIRC some 250 million years ago, we were all neighbors anyway. On the super-continent named Pangaea I think..

Then plate tectonics drove us apart, not politics since that hadn't been invented yet :D .

Its not that bad ... most of the nasties are easy to avoid.

They will love it though the weather in Darwin isn't the best 0 hot and muggy.

The beer and women should compensate them nicely.

A piece of paper is capable of killing if handled poorly. ;)
November 22, 2011 7:51:02 AM

Jeez you eastcoasters are a paranoid bunch ... though I can think of a few pieces of paer that could kill those with a heart condition.

We ran the benchmark test 14 times just to be sure ... then we ran them again ... and again ... then we wrote a solid review and posted this !!!

That bar is very low in education ...

They make up for it with their soaring teen pregnancy rate, and "Proportion of Children Under 18 Living Below the Federal Poverty Level"

November 22, 2011 4:43:30 PM

Dear Dr. Reynod,

I seem to develop a mass on my lower abdomen. May I schedule an appointment with you to review my health records and have you take a look at the mass that has developed.

Thank You kindly.

Dogman_1234

P.S. This is funny.
November 23, 2011 9:27:15 AM

Dear Master Doggy,

I am referring you to my colleague Professor Ry as your problems are well beyond my existential scope of expertise ... therefore requiring his legendary intervention in all things definitive.

If it is as I suspect we may need to consult Dr MouseMonkey (attending surgeon) who among other things specialises in removing foreign particles from the body ... usually associated with motorcycle accidents I might add.

I have looked at the latest CAT scan and can confirm a 2007 Suzuki Moped to be the primary offending article.

Please switch it off for increased comfort prior to, but possibly not limited to, after the event.

Mind regards (with Brawndos),

Dr reynod FRACKER

P.S. The red probe is not to be inserted into the mouth at any time.

November 23, 2011 6:25:34 PM

Dr. Rey,

Thank you for you consultation. Dr. MouseMonkey said the surgery went by well.

Dr. Ry also has reviewed my records and confirmed I need to be exposed to more radon gas to clear the mass in my abdomen.

I have enclosed the check in a letter by mail. I hope it will be enough to pay for all that Aussie Booze you love making so much. ;)
