This is my first "official PC" (I built a PC halfway and fried the mobo at 8 years old). Anyway, I'm 6 years older now and I'm planning to build a PC alone. I've got a few configs going.

Case & Power Supply:
ATX Mid-tower (least 300W)(I'll choose later)
Fans:
8 CM fan x2 or x3 $8 - $16
Motherboard:
MSI i848P Single Channel $70 - $75
Processor:
P4 2.8GHZ HT $220
Memory:
Kingston 512 MB DDR $75
Hard Drive:
Seagate 60GB 7200 rpm $73
Floppy Drive:
1.44 Drive $5
CD/DVD/RW Drives:
$55/$45 (total about $100)
Modem:
PCI 56K $15 - $20
Sound Card:
Dolby Digital 5.1 $9
Video Card:
Nvidia GF 4 FX 5200 128MB $80
Keyboard:
MS or Logitech $20
Mouse (already got a spare)
OS Win XP Home $100

Total Price $840 (est)

I'm still trying to keep things under $800. I'm also a softcore gamer and play around with CAD programs. I would like to know if this setup is good, or compatible.

Thanks guys.

I'd pass on the single channel boards. You can get the Abit IS7 for $95 at some places. You don't want to cheap out on the board.

FX5200 is a very weak video card, consider the old GeForce4 Ti4200 instead.

You want PC3200 RAM or better. Dual channel is prefered but you can go single channel now and upgrade later. Dual channel boards support single channel mode.

Thanks for the help.

How would the Geforce FX5600 128MB compare with the Ti 4200 128MB?

Reply to Newton22

The Ti 4200 128MB has:
NVIDIA NV25; DX 8.1; 250/444 Chip/Memory; 128-bit; 4x2 Pipelines

The FX5600 128MB has:
NVIDIA NV31; DX 9; 325/550 Chip/Memory; 128-bit; 4x1 Pipelines

As far as performance goes, they're almost the same.
I believe the Ti 4200 is cheaper. But if you decide on getting the Ti 4200 get the version with 64MB of RAM. Most benchmarks back it up. Has something to do with the 64MB version being equipped with better RAM.
