My laptop works fine 90% of the time but whenever I run a high hard drive extensive task (antivirus scan, spybot scan) the computer will just turn off. I will turn it back on and it will start to boot and turn off again. I wait 30 mins and turn it on and it works fine. I was guessing it was my CPU overheating but I can run CPU extensive tasks and it never crashes. Another guess is the battery because it is pretty worn out from being plugged in all the time but I dunno. My computer stats are listed below. Thanks for your help. Justin.

gamepc laptop. p4 2.66ghz. 512 ram. windows xp sp2. dvd/cdrw. mobility 9000 graphics. any other specs needed let me know.

The symptoms you're describing sound very much like a power supply issue. Notebook psu's have a limited life span and I would guess your's is on it's way out. If it works most of the time then I would keep it as a spare and buy a new one.

Maybe a worn out HDD that overheat and crash. Or,HDD can cause lot of heat in laptop so maybe that the heat of you HDD + the one from the CPU is too much.

If you can borrow another HDD just to test, you could see if it is the problem.

-Always put the blame on you first, then on the hardware !!!
