One of my friends is having no end of motherboard problems so i said i'd find him an inexpensive upgrade. He is currently using an MSI 6378 (KLE 133) with a duron 1100 and 256mb PC133.I was thinking of keeping the processor and just getting him a DDR motherboard and some decent PC2100, since i can get a decent price for the PC133 on ebay.Ideally i was looking to buy something like an MSI 745 Ultra for him but i can't find one anywhere (in the UK).Ebuyer had them until about last week but they've all gone now and there seems to be no prospect of any more. So,i was having a look at the 746FX and 748 based boards (they mostly seem to be ASRock ones). Can anyone tell me if these two chipsets are as good and stable as 745?I am mainly looking at SIS because they are cheap and stable but if anyone has any other suggestions i am open to them, but please bear in mind that i am looking for something very low in price but not too 'cheap'.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I know it's a fine line but i don't think he'll stretch quite that far.

i have an asrock K7S8XE with the sis748 chipset and it is great! i have my 1800+ running at 2200+ with no problems at all, running 256mb crucial PC2700 ddr.....its an awesome board to run and tweak the settings on...i also have an 745 ultra in my backup system, also an excellent board, but i think the asrock is better....you wont be sorry for going with the asrock....

Hey, I might be about to sell an MSI 745 Ulra when (and if) I get an nforce 2 mobo. I live in the UK and would sell it to you for £20 excluding P&P (should be around £5 for RM Special delivery). PM me if you want more details. I might even be able to sell you 256MB of PC2700 Crucial that does 2-2-2-5 at 133FSB, possibly for £25-30.

The K7S8XE (SiS748) is a fantastic board. The HDD performance is outstanding (especially when you compare the prices). If your friend goes for one of the new SiS based boards he shouls take a look over at OCWorkbench where he'll find performance BIOSs for the K7S8XE and K7S8X (both rev1 and rev3)

AMD Is An Anagram Of MAD, Intel Is An Anagram Of INLET, Cyrix...Ah Who Cares?
