The problem with the Compaq may be the case.
Compaq uses proprietary motherboards/cases so if you wanted to swap say the motherboard the plugs from the case may not plug into the new mboard.
I just did that to one that had a K6-2 500 chip. Worked fine. With an intel board,(old) you may have to change the psu. With an intel board (new) you will have to change the psu, or get an adaptor dongle for the extra mobo power connector. That is also true for some boards for Amd processors. Thing I dont like is the micro atx form factor that most compaqs use. New cpus benefit from the extra air (cooling) space in a taller tower.
Actually a lot of Compaq machines used standard motherboards (often MicroATX) with proprietary power supplies (using an AT style switch on an ATX supply).

As long as the MB fits in the case and the power supply is ok you can use the old hard drive and optical drives.
But you will need to do a clean install of the OS!!!
The drivers for the old MB wont work for the new MB.
Also take note that compaq power supplys are very weak. Even the new ones are only 200 to maybe 250 watts max.
Youll be better to get.... ahh heck just get a new case, power supply, proc, memory, MB, video card.
In other words dont worry about using the old one for anything else but storage or surfing the net.
