Cable modem and router

Hi,

Does a router work with all cable modems? I mean is that possible, that the
cable tv company which provides my internet (with dynamic IP), has put some
limitations or so, that it is impossibe to connect through a router?
Can I just connect a router/access point to a cable modem? And does it work
to share the internet over home WLAN without woring about the provider
because such limiations don't exist at all?

My experience says no, not all routers work with all modems. We use Cox
Cable internet service with a Terayon modem at my office and the Linksys
router that we bought just wouldn't work. After replacing the router twice,
Cox said there was a compatibility issue with Linksys device and the modem.
So we switched to a Netgear router and everything's working great.
