Since I began using a new PC I build in December it has failed twice.
Both times, during boot, WinXP flashes a blue screen (at the point right before it finishes loading), a blue screen comes up for a fraction of a second and the PC reboots itself. This cycle continues indefinitely.
Upon loading the disk into another PC with very similar hardware, the exact same thing happens.
This last time I was using the PC right when in failed. A strange message came us in Windows, something to the effect of “unknown hardware error”. I was working in Dreamweaver MX at the time and it wouldn’t let me do any new work, but the system didn’t lock up and allowed me to save and restart normally. Then the reboot cycle occurred again.
Hardware is:
AMD XP2800
Shuttle Motherboard with nForce3 chipset.
APACER 3200 RAM (dual channel) 512MB total
Chaintech 5200FX w/256MB
Dual Maxtor 120GB IDE (Not mirrored) – short cables
A Lite-on DVD Recorder and a Lite-on DVD reader
6-1 USB card reader – internal
ANTEC 480W True Blue PS
Sounds like possibly the MSBlaster worm. Look in the WinXP section in the archives about October of 2003 for the posts with links to the cure, and WinXP patch.
