Perhaps the group could help with this specific problem with sending a
picture message from Outlook express via earthlink.net to a LG VX 6000
phone.
All text messages from my outlook express go the phone just fine. Pictures
from other email clients and computers are received on the phone just fine.
Problem: When sent from my computer's outlook express via earthlink, the
picture is received by the phone, saved by the phone in the inbox, but it
will not display the picture. The error message is "Failed to play pix
message". Seems like the header and msg info arrives but the picture
doesn't display. Same picture from different address displays fine.
Verizon tech support on this issue has not been helpful.
Any ideas?

ELN may be repackaging your attachment (virus scanning, etc) which
somehow hoses the phone's ability to decode the attachment.

Just out of curiosity, what are you doing when attaching? You can insert a
file, or a picture. try it both ways. Picture and files are processed/virus
scanned differently. Do you have any virus software installed? You may want
to temporarily disable it. I've heard of people having problems when the
scan does strange things with attached files.

Thanks for the reply.
1) Attaching .jpg to email, and adding 3 words of text (which doesn't
display). Have been sending using HTML format vs plain text.
2) Haven't tried "inserting" a .jpg. Good idea.
3) Using Norton anti-virus, but I don't think it is scanning email
attachments.
BTW - going to Earthlink.net's site and using my mail account from their web
mail, works! So it is some setting perhaps on my Outlook Express, I would
imagine.
In searching this newsgroup for info on this subject, the only thing that
was close was about server setting. Old Earthlink mail = smtp.earthlink.net
vs. new settings= smtpauth.earthlink.net. I haven't got to Earthlink tech
support yet to ask them about setting. They didn't have an answer for my
VZW pix message problem, except just us their web mail site.

I hate to say it, but tech support probably won't give you an answer, but
then again, from your testing, you have proved it is at YOUR end (outlook
express settings probably) instead of earthlink anyway. (You can send em via
webmail right? It's ONLY when you use OE. Right?). Do you know how to get at
the headers of a message? (from the message list, right click, select
properties, then message source, you will get a bunch of stuff like

The important part of that would be the line(s) MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/mixed; That's usually the coding used for inserting
an attached file. See if it says anything else. (If something else go to
tools/options/send and see what your mail settings are, and make sure it's
set for html for email (not news) and "send pictures with email" is
checked).
I would say try inserting a file attachment rather than attaching a
picture...

Yes, the header indicates messages sent with MIME 1.0. Yes, is seems to be
peculiar to this machine with this email client/settings. When I get a
chance later I will give your idea of "inserting" the picture a try.
OT - with this issue and the virus issues (I have gotten hit with the
Trojans), I am seriously thinking about giving Apple OS X a try for a second
machine. Any comments?
Thanks for you input on this, Peter Pan.

It depends on what you use your machine for. Most of the cost/sweat/work
goes into the data and programs. If you have a second machine that's
incompatible with the first, programs won't work the same, you run the risk
of data not being easily transferable, a second set of programs that may not
work the same as your first set, and of course the learning curve you
already went thru to learn how to use what you have.
When I wanted to add a second (and now 3 with the PDA (with a wireless
connection), and even more since there is also a hotspot here for up to 250
users), I took a bit different tack. To tighten up the security on my main
system I went with a software firewall (zonealarm pro under $45), and then
to add even more security (and give me a whole lot of flexibility) went with
a linksys WRT54G Wireless-g broadband router (for under $90), give me WIFI
(B and G)/a wired router/a broadband connection & distribution device. Doing
that allowed me to use the same software/data/programs I already had and
know how to use, added a bunch of security, and gave me unlimited expansion
possibilities.
While there is nothing wrong with apple (had to say that or the apple
fanatics would have my hide), I just felt that for me, all the money/time I
had invested in software/learning, was better served by looking at a cheap
way to protect things, and give me an outrageous set of expansion
possibilities. When I found out how cheap wireless networks were, I put one
in the RV. Nothing better than sitting by the fire with my laptop
PS Price drop on zonealarm pro!, see it at

It's $39.95 now.

Most likely. I dropped OE and went to Eudora and have a much better mail
client.
