Could really use some help here.... Been trying to install the chipset drivers after assembling the rig. using the retail disk (the crappy thing has drivers from 1/15/03-over a year old!)

Anyway, so far can't get the installer to work. After the the notice about the install shield I get a pop up titled "Browse for Folder" telling me to insert the win98 disk into the drive indicated below (on my directory tree displayed below message).

Well, the only thing highlighted is "My Computer". Nothing seems to work. E.g., if I try to insert win98 disk, first I get the usual waring about 'eject request to drive in use" then after inserting 98se and hitting ok or whatever I get the follwing message:

ERROR READING CD-ROM IN DRIVE E:

PLEASE INSERT CD-ROM WITH SERIAL NUMBER 906D-599F IN E:

IF CD-ROM IS STILL IN THE DRIVE, IT MAY REQUIRE CLEANING

PRESS ENTER FOR OK OR ESC TO CANCEL"

WTF is going on? Btw this after a fresh install on 98se
and no need to tell me about win XP, ain't an option now and researched the abit site before purchasing to insure that it s/b compatible with 98se

I'd really apprerciate some help. I've been futzing with this d@mmed thing for two days.

Note: nothings OC'ed yet

Due to issues with Win98 and various IDE controllers NOT loading without the driver installed (which relies on a CD you can't access without the IDE controller working right...), I've come to the following conclusion: It's best to:
1.) Start computer from CD with CD support
2.) Format drive
3.) md c:\win98
4.) cd d:
5.) copy win98 c:\win98

Then you have a copy of the Windows 98 directory on your hard drive. Run settup from THAT directory and it will never ask for your Win98 CD again!

You'll also end up with a sound problem.
You will have to find a patch

Q242937 supposed fix for 98SE. Not 98 or b4.

However when I play an mp3 or a wav in windows media player,
and in *some* games the sound skips and does not play properly.
It skips through the track missing chunks out.
This is not a problem when in WinXP.

U can use dxdiag to turn down/off hardware support if u want.

Did you run "windows update"? do this first.
Then search and download all drivers from the manufacturers' websites. First motherboard, then video card, then sound, then others.

A fine day!
