Do I have to use certain phones with the pre-pay plans? Can I take a
phone from a normal plan (out of contract) and use it with the pre-pay
system?

As far as I know, you can activate any VZW-compatible phone on prepay.

Of course, you won't get discounts on the phone price for the most
part (I think they only sell one or two models that way for prepay),
but it sounds like you're talking about an existing phone.

The only other caveat I can think about - you may or may not be able
to use such things as data features on prepay, even if the phone
supports it otherwise. I know at one point, they've sold a "pp"
version of the Motorola T720, which may have been able to do GIN. I
don't know if the prepay price structure supports it otherwise.

Yes. Been there, done that. It helps greatly if it is a VZW phone,
but any compatible phone which isn't locked by the original carrier
can be used. You can use a locked one *if* you can get it unlocked.

Yes: This is an existing phone.

As for the locking ... if it's a VZW phone is this even an issue?

No, because VZW doesn't lock their regular account phones (not sure
about Free-Up phones), and even if they did, they are the ones who
would have the unlock code. So if it is an old VZW phone, locking is
a moot point. They will gladly sign you up for pre-paid (Free-Up)
service on that phone. OOC, is it a digital phone (with or w/o
analog)?

If it's a VZW phone and being used on VZW, no.

They will trip over each other trying to be the one to sign you up.
Enjoy.
