Objective : avoid conflicts between switch port & NIC settings
Source : Linux Server
Network : TCP/IP
Targets : workstations & servers (windows >=95, linux, solaris)
Info available about targets : IP address
Question 1 : how can I know which OS is running on the target ?
Question 2 : how can I consult the target's NIC speed & duplex settings ?

Thx

Mikael

I don't believe there is a way to obtain that info remotely. But these days, most of the NIC's I run across support auto-detect on those settings. So it's usually something you don't have to worry about.

Yes, but all this is about improving an old network, and so looking for conflicts without having to check every workstation's config manually...

And what about detecting target's OS ?

best you could do about remotely querying would be SNMP calls, but of course the target machines would have to have that service enabled. Here is the usenet SNMP faq or you can search the web yourself for more info. Good luck.
