I am trying to find out if anyone else is having this issue when connecting
an external PS2 keyboard to the HP Pavillion zd1010us notebook.
When an external PS2 keyboard is connected to the notebook with a PS2 to USB
converter. The Shift and Ctrl keys don't work properly. If you press and
hold the shift key, then type a few letters, wait about 2-3 seconds and type
more letters. The letters come across as lower case, even though the shift
key was held down the whole time. If I release and press the shift key
again, it will type upper case until it is released again. See example
below:
AAAAAaaaaa
I have reproduced this using a Compaq and Belkin F5U119-E PS2 to USB
converter. Along with two different types of PS2 keyboards, a Microsoft
Natural and a Dell PS2.
A similar problem happens using Ctrl keys if you have an application that
uses them. For example pressing a Ctrl+C to copy a selection followed by a
Ctrl+V to paste is somwhere else will dump a "v" into the insertion point if
the 2-3 second interval has elapsed.
I have tried the same configuration on another type of notebook and on a
Dell desktop computer and it works correctly.
I had a friend try it who has the same notebook and he was able to reproduce
it too.
I tried thought maybe it was a BIOS issue and I had the latest BIOS
installed F35. and dropped it back to the earliest BIOS version I could
download which was F.05 and it still had the same issue.
It does work correctly if I connect a USB external keyboard as long as it is
not using a PS2 to USB converter.
But that doesn't help my situation because I work on several computers using
a KVM switch and all the other computers are PS2.
The problem isn't caused by the KVM switch either because my testing was
done connecting directly to the PS2 to USB converter.
I really like this notebook other than this issue.
I am running Win XP Pro SP2, but this problem occurred with the Win XP Home
that was installed before I upgraded the OS so it doesn't appear to be an XP
Pro or SP2 issue.
The line that I got from HP support was that XP Pro SP2 is unsupported so
they weren't very helpful.
