I am running Mandrake 10 on my laptop and I have an orinoco 802.11b card.
Wireless works fine but I am trying to get the card working in monitor mode
so I can use kismet for my wireless class. I tried just installing the
orinoco patch to the existing kernel source and rebuilding the kernel but it
still says that it is an invalid command when I try to go into monitor
mode(iwconfig understands but it fails to do the set). I've also tried
grabbing the new cvs tree for the orinoco drivers but that won't compile.
Something about pcmcia_cs must allow for overwriting.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Inferno

Among the distros I've tried, the only one with a working Kismet
is Knoppix STD. It's a live CD so you can download and try it.
See the link on distrowatch.

Hello Chuck. Remember me from numerous SCO Forums?

If you're gonna try a bootable distribution, I suggest trying:
http://www.remote-exploit.org/?page=auditor
which is also based on Knoppix. It's rather complete collection of
about 300 assorted Linux based wireless and wired security tools and
hammers on one bootable CDROM. Kismet 2004.04.R1 is on the CD and
works fine.

Ah yes. The good days.

I downloaded Auditor and burned it to CD.

Auditor has a nice look to it, but in an HP 5420 it did not work with
an external wheel mouse on USB, a Linksys Ethernet card, or a Orinoco
Classic Gol 802.11b card. Needless to say, Kismet is a no-go. Knoppix
STD did not exhibit these problems.
