Soyo dragon plus freezes every morning

I have a strange problem that I'm struggling to troubleshoot. I've had a Soyo Dragon Plus for over two years. Three months or so ago, it started randomly freezing upon boot every morning. It usually boots to windows xp, stays functional anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, then freezes. This happens for two or three more reboots, then it works fine for the rest of the day. I've even rebuilt the windows xp install and it started doing this again. I've run memtest for about and hour, defragged drives, scandisk.

I'm puzzled. It's like warming up a car. Any ideas?

I have:
Soyo K7V Dragon Plus
512 Mb ram
IBM Desktar 60GXP 60gb drive
GeForce 3 Ti 200
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
Adaptec USB 2.0 pci card
VIA drivers 4.51

Thanks in advance.

  1. PSU problem? I'd look at my voltage rails when booted up in the am (MBM5 is a free proggie for d/l that can help) also should show up in your BIOS.

I've a psu that does something similar, I narrowed my problem to the cold here in the mornings. I put a blow dryer on it for a minute to heat it up and I'm good to go.

  3. Thanks Coyote & Jihiggs.

I'll look in the power supply forum, but any recommendations for a 350 to 400W PSU on the silent side?

    Thanks again.
  4. Flash your CMOS or you have a PSU issue. Sometimes the source is the PSU but you power provider could be at blame for giving you crappy juice. Make sure you use a UPS box. Otherwise get a better PSU like Enermax, Antec, or Fortron Source.

  6. OK, thanks a bunch.

I'm going down the PSU route.
