Is this mobo good? One of my friend needs a new mobo for using with his AXP 1700+ (Palomino). He has only DDR266 and the CPU is a very poor overclocker (in prime95 standard. It can run prime95 stable only upto 139 MHz FSB in my ABIT NF7 v2.0, though it seems stable at 143 MHz FSB). Overclockability and absense of AGP/PCI lock is not a problem. He just needs a good performing mobo with rock solid stability and reliabilty.

Price is also important. My friend has budget limitations and he wants to spend as low as possible. Last time I checked price at local market (3 months ago), it was priced $75 and ABIT NF7 v2.0 was priced $95. Prices don't fall quickly here, so I think current prices aren't much different. Is it a good idea to buy ASRock K8SXE+ and save $20? I've never used any ASRock mobo before or doesn't know anybody who has used ASRock mobos. On the other hand, my ABIT NF7 v2.0 has been great at both stock and overclocked speed since I bought it 8 months ago.

In general, are ASRock mobos as good as ASUS? I've heard that ASRock is part of ASUS. If it's true, then why ASUS is using a differnt brand name for these inexpensive mobos?

I would check on asrock's warranty and stick with a reputable vender such as newegg. Asrock boards may be ok, just offer fewer features and less overclocking adjustments in the bios. If buying from a local vender, I would be sure he will replace it and handle any rma requests for you. Sometimes dealer service is just as important as the name brand. Asus quality isn't quite as good as it used to be, and I wouldn't pay a premium for them anymore.

yes, ASRock K8SXE+ are rock solid boards, i am running 2 of them one with a 2500+ barton running at 3200+ and one with a 2200+ and built 3 systems for customers with the board, it uses the SiS 748 chipset and runs 200X11 fsb setting with no problem as long as the ram is of good quality, i use crucial PC2700, it will also support the 400 fsb and the + model has SATA raid support, i have had mine for several months with absolutley no problems running win98SE and WIN XP PRO....go ahead and buy one, you wont be sorry, i get mine from www.cbear.net, he has sold some on ebay for 49.00 plus shipping, you can find them on ebay for as little as 39.00 plus shipping. they are excellent boards, in fact i am buying 3 more next week....got a 2000+ cpu to put in the next one.....I love this board(can you tell?)
