my motherboard just died and i got this processor just lately
so id like to keep it but i still want to keep my chances open for upgrades
so id like to know what is the motherboard that can fit an athlon xp 2700
and still be uprgadable

it should have an agp and at least 4 pci slots [better 6]
if it has built in 6+1 audio its even better
i dont care for built in modems or lan since i have pci cards for it
but if it has those features - its ok if they are easy to turn off

please advise on possible overclocks and the corresponding power supply

thank you very much - i know my question is very specific
but please share a thought

Look for ASUS, MSI, Epox mobos based on nForce2 Ultra400 chipset, if this mobo is not available

You can expect get 2.3 GHz easily without extreme cooling. But luck also plays a big role on how much OC you can get.

yep thanks - thats the way it was on the old board - i guess there is no higher than that

btw - is there a motherboard that can fit both Athlon XP or the new 64?
are there athlons of the new generation that are for slot A?

Athlon64 doesn't work with Athlon XP mobos.

Athlon64 needs Socket 754 mobo

Athlon64-FX and Opterons need Socket 940 mobo

Only inital Athlons back in 1999 used Slot A. Slot A is obsolete since 2000.

Later Athlon (Thunderbird)/Duron/Athlon XP use Socket-A.

The last processor for Socket-A is Athlon XP 3200+, which is very little faster than your 2700+

socket a of course...sorry...too much of them anyway hehe :)
so i guess there is no way to know if they will develop a 64 for socket a?

They will not. In fact they will start making the xp chips for socket 754 or 939, in the near future. The 4 year reign of socket A is over. Man but it sure lasted a long time.

ouch...well i guess keeping that 2700+ is pointless...
but those 64s are too expensive right now!
bad time for upgrade...bad time for dead motherboards...
i guess id just upgrade to that nforce 2 level
and have to look forward into buying
a whole new set in about a year...

thanks for the headsup endyen

2700+ is a very good procesor even in today's standard. It has no problem outperforming P4 2.66B GHz and performs similar to P4 2.6C GHz

thats true - thats why i bought it 3 months ago
but it appears tomorrow socket a is a dead end
and when i have to buy a new motherboard
i always try to get a model that would allow me further cpu upgrade
while in this case i have no choice

anyway - thank you for the support - you have been really helpfull

I think the day and age of having a motherboard that allows for future upgrades is gone. I mean, any high end cpu costs 2 to 3 times (if not) more than the average motherboard. I say buy a board that has the most useful features and allows you to get the most out of the cpu (e.g. putting a 266mhz bus cpu in a 333mhz bus board). Upgradeability means a hell of a lot less to me than compatibility. I usually replace my motherboard and cpu at the same time... what's the point in buying a new chip only to put it into an old board? Who cares if the board you buy now is going to be a dead end... so is the xp2700.
