I'm a real newbie to all this so please forgive any ignorance on my part.
Here's the problem.
I use a wireless router (hope that's the right name for it) from Belkin to
enable me to connect to the internet via ntl's cable modem. I don't have a
wireless network at home - it's just used as a means of connecting to the
internet from around the house.
The ntl modem is connected to a PC upstairs in the loft conversion and the
wireless router is also upstairs.
I have a Belkin PCMCIA wireless card in my laptop which connects to the
internet/email fine.
However, I've recently been having probs with my main desktop PC (which is
downstairs) which uses a Belkin PCI card.
I deduced that it was a hardware failure as my laptop is fine so have just
bought yet another PCI card and installed it this morning.
Hoorah I thought as oodles of email started arriving but it all seems to
have gone pear-shaped again.
If I click on Connect or Repair it just sits there and nothing
happens...arrgghhh! Re-booting my PC doesn't help but I wonder if it can't
find the IP address (?? am I talking rubbish?)
As I use my main desktop PC downstairs to communicate with my office (I work
from home much of the time), it's getting pretty urgent that I fix this.
Whilst I can use my laptop to communicate to the office, all my files etc...
are on my desktop. It's driving me nuts!!
Any suggestion of what might be the problem would be very welcome.

There could be a whole bunch of reasons for the problem. Simple dumb
suggestion:
why not put the modem and router next to the desktop machine and connect by
Cat5. See if it that works OK.
You said you don't have a wireless network at home, but with 2 wireless
machines connected communicating with the router, you are networked.
Assuming you're running XP and have SP2 installed, try running the new
wireless networking wizard and see if that helps. It's pretty decent.

Thanks for the reply Alan but I seem to have sorted out my problem. I
uninstalled ZoneAlarm Pro (firewall) completely and then reinstalled
v5.1.011.000 (as opposed to version 5.1.033.000 which was released last
week) and all now seems back to normal....HOORAH I am so pleased to be up
and running again!!
Perhaps this could be the cause of other people's difficulties as the
symptoms described by Paul Raven and Mike seem similar.

I had the modem put in by ntl upstairs but since then I'm using the room as
another bedroom. I don't want cables all over the house either! Us girls
don't like mess you know! ;-)

Well I suppose I am (!) but I'm reluctant to do file or printer sharing as
I'm worried about security. Anyway, I think my router is only for use with
a cable modem(?) I may be wrong about that of course.
Kind regards,
Linda
