I hope someone can help..

My System is running a:

Athlon 64 3200
Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro
1Gb of Crucial 333 DDR
Radeon 9800 128Mb
160Gb SATA (Maxtor)

The system is i thought would fly but i am a little disappointed with just how sluggish it is.. Does any one have any ideas on how to speed things up??

1. Also are there any Dual DDR boards for Socket 754?? If not will there be one for the DDR2 boards??

2. Has anyone else had problems with none certificate for SATA for windows XP??

3. My board supports x8 AGP. The new Nvidia 68000 ultra runs at x16 AGP. Does this mean I would need to update my board to get all the benefits and if so what’s the point should I just get a new board with PCI Express and DDR2??

Thanks for any Help...

1) A64 (non -FX) has an on-die (contained in the CPU), single channel, DDR memory controller, so NO, socket 754 will not get one. S939 WILL however get one, but the extra pins are necessary. likewise DDR2 would require a change of the CPU die, so therefore is unlikely for at least a year probably.

2) No idea

3) 16x AGP does not exist, and never will. You're thinking of 16x PCI Express, and I doubt even the 6800 will fully exploit even 8x AGP anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it.

More important than these points, WHY do you think your system is slow? it should be fast as hell, especially in games.

errr... Hang on..
1Gb of Crucial 333 DDR
You should have DDR400 memory ideally. Are you sure everything is running at the right speed (your CPU should be at 2.0Ghz)

yeah i know i should have DDR400 which i think is making it sluggish.. I installed Max Payne2 And there was lag within the game.. control was sluggish.. i just built a comp for a friend and went for a P4 3.0 , 2Gb Dual DDR400 and the same Graphics card as me. and it installed Max Payne2 on that and it run like a dream.. was very pissed off.. Any idea on what DDR400 i should get?

not too sure to be honest - I know some of these a64 boards can be picky about what RAM you use, so I'd suggest waiting for someone who owns one to make a suggestion. Myself, I've always found Corsair to be good stuff - expensive, but does the job damn well.

That said though, it shouldn't make that huge a difference for your rig. have you definitely installed all the right drivers? particularly the AGP drivers for your Motherboard? Plus are you running anything in the background that you don't need which is eating resources. Are you sure you don't have any viruses, worms, spyware etc?

I can't believe your system is sluggish, you probably have something wrong with drivers/virus/spyware or something defective. Your sytem should kick ass in games. Of course, if you try to run games in 1600x1200 with FSAA/aniso and all settings to HIGH quality, your games will be sluggish... ave you tried to bench with 3DMark or any other synthetic benchmark, to compare your numbers with review numbers?

If it's definitely not spyware/virus/etc, then I would suggest making sure you've installed all the latest and greatest Drivers from VIA (for the motherboard) and Ati (for the graphics)

I didn't want to start a new thread when this one is named so well for my purpose... I'm looking at getting into an a64 and was looking for a recommendation. It seems like the nforce 3s are top of the performance heap. If anyone could make a suggestion on a specific board I'd appreciate it. Also I currently only have a 350 watt psu, will this be enough for that processor? I'm running a dvd drive, a burner 2HDDs and a ati 9500 pro and might upgrade to 9800pro before this round of upgrades is all said and done.
