Possible voltage problem?

I got my new mobo today, my old is giving up the ghost (see thread in Win XP)

I check the manual and it says DO NOT USE A 3.3V GRAPHICSCARD IN THIS MOBO!
I have a ASUS 8420 TD graphics card and I am unsure of the voltage levels on this card, will I trash the mobo if I use this card?

Oh btw, the mobo is an Asrock K7S8X.

I just called the customersupport to check out if there could be any problems, he just told me that there would be no problems as all 'new' gfx-card can 'detect' what voltage they are being fed with (or something like that).

In my gfx-manual it says: be sure to have a PSU that are capable of delevering 3.3V... I am confused and I am asking you guys, I never trusted salesmen anyway =)

you should be fine. your Ti4200 card will work in that mobo, as it's AGP 4x which uses 1.5V

3.3V is from a much older AGP standard.

Ok thanks, does'nt it seem odd that a 3.3V graphicscard will fry if you put it in a 1.5V slot? seems more logical if it were the other way around...

Oh well.

I believe the Voltage refers to the signal strength, rather than the power draw of the card.

So a few of the connectors from the motherboard are supplying power TO the card, probably something like 5V (but I don't actually know), but when the card communicates with the motherboard the signals it sends are carried on a 1.5V signal.

So an older card would try to 'talk' to the motherboard with 3.3V, which is bound to fry something if the motherboard is expecting 1.5.

I don't know this for a fact, but I think it's something along these lines. No doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong

Nah, you're probably right...my knowledge in this area is somewhat limited.

I will install the mobo later tonight (after a few more beer :p), I'll let ya know how it turned out...
