Hit the on button on my case this morning and heard a pop and then smelled smoke. The power supply has a blown capacitor, so I go out and get another one (Antec truepower 430W)hoping that everything else is ok. Well it seems that the MB is fried, No beeps with everthing out.

It's an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe board rev 1.06.
I have a 2500+
2x512 Cosair XMS2700 DDR

I was hoping that this setup would last me a bit longer because I spent alot of money on it. I really can't wait for an RMA on the board. Had it over a year anyway.

My question is:

Should I just get another of the same MB, or is there another one that is more modern that will work with my current equipment and allow me to have a good upgrade path?

BTW, I'd like to stay with ASUS....this is the first one that has ever died on me and more than likely it was the PS that killed it.

Thanks,
BK

Mobo may not be dead. Take it to your local computer techie shop and have them look at it for you. Most will look at it for a nominal fee or even for free.

Look at the mobo to see if anything on it has fried. Try another processor. Clear the cmos. Take it out of the case and try it with just the basics plugged in.

P.S. those have a 3 year warranty.
Edited by Jimbo99 on 04/28/04 07:19 PM.

Jimbo,

I've tried all of that, clearing cmos, board out, etc I've been all over the board with a magnifing glass. No burnt spots or leaking/blown caps. My guess is a chip or very small component got zapped.
(Im a Electrical Engineer and technician), plus there are no computer stores around here.

I haven't been keeping up with the current MB/CPU/MEM technology since I bought the system. I just don't want to waste my money on another a7n8x if there is something better.

Thanks,
BK

Splendid
NF7-S by Abit is a nice board. It has a NB fan, runs a little less volts to the chip (and has lots of adjustment) has a heavier v-reg cct (3 phase) has soundstorm etc, but costs 10% less.

If you need a new mobo, then buy ABIT NF7-S v2.0

Thanks you guys for the advice. Looking at those options today and hopefully making a decision as well.

Actually with the 3yr warr. I might send it back to ASUS and wait for it to come back to put it in a secondary machine :)
