Palm announced this a few weeks ago. It's them, not Verizon.

The Treo 600 is the exact same price either with or without the
camera in the Northeast region, don't know why. Many customers who don't
necessarily want the camera are going to buy the camera version just because
of that -- it may be what Palm wants.

I don't think so. Many will specifically *not* want the camera.
For example those who have to have it in places that require
you to check the cameras at the door. Since it's a PDA phone
and you are likely to want to have your data/schedule/etc with
you all the time (it's less of a candidate for those who use 2
phones -- one for outside and one for inside because of the
camera).

I just finished serving jury duty and any person entering the courthouse
with a camera phone had to check it at the door or else leave it in their
car...they weren't permitted inside. Regular non-camera phones were OK.
Another case where a "regular" phone was preferred over a camera phone!

That was true for me as well when I had jury duty two years ago in Indiana.

Where was this and where were you going in the court house? I've been
in many a court house, and have never been asked to surrender my phone
at the door. The only signs I've ever seen were ones telling you to
turn them off when in the court room.

I think he meant the phones were checked for cameras; at first I thought
you had to hand over your phone, too. Tom

On second reading, you just might be right. But I've never seen them
check or ask here. Still, yet another great reason not to own one of
those ridiculous things. It seems the more gadgets these "phone
plus.." things acquire, the greater the restrictions and inconvenience
will be to ALL cell phone users.

Sometimes, there is no choice. In order to get a bluetooth equipped
phone that works with the Verizon service, I have to get a built-in
camera.

I agree; I have a V60s and could not be more happy with it. My only
problem with it so far is that my wife uses mine instead of her T730. I
really do just want to use my phone for talking, though I can see where
a lot of people find them very useful for business, and might like
Bluetooth etc.

Then please enlighten me. Exactly what is Bluetooth? In the few
posts I've cared to read about it here, it just seemed like a wireless
way for the phone to communicate with other devices, like an ear piece
or syncing with a computer. I'd rather just deal with a wire than pay
the extra money to put up with the extra hassle. What am I missing
here?

I guess I'm having a hard time imagining what business would prefer
the lower grade photos of a phone/camera combo over the higher
resolution of a decent digital camera.

This camera-in-a-phone craze seems geared more towards the kids and
people who just like gadgets. Of course, more by consequence than
design, they can come in handy at times, like documenting a crime in
progress. But then, I carry my digital camera with me, too.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. I want it so I can connect the phone to
the hands-free functions of my car. That way, I can use the built-in
speakers and microphone of the car, and the car's phone book/directory.

I will also get a bluetooth headset if I can find one that works with my
hearing aids.

Once the devices are mated, there is no extra hassle. And I'd rather
not have the wires, especially when using a headset or handsfree setup
in the car.

Sorry; I was thinking about some of the other features business people
might want like Bluetooth, PDA's etc, and not a camera phone. I only
made it sound like I was talking about a camera phone. :)

Hell, even the above may be mistaken, since I am not a businessman. I
only use my phone to talk, and I hope I never get so busy I need a PDA.
If I do, I hope I can instead afford a good looking secretary. Tom

The hassle, meaning, I'd rather put up with the wires than be forced
into using a phone/camera combo (the situation you find yourself in),
which would be subject to the scrutiny earlier described, just to get
BT.

The last time I had jury duty was in the mid-90s, before I had a cell
phone, but they did have a rule against them and used it to also deny me my
ham ht, even in the room where you wait to be called for a jury (I sat all
day in uncomfortable chairs and never got called). Reasoning was that it
can transmit.

Yeah, I would expect some sort of limitation in the jury rooms and
court rooms. I was in our local court house today, and it had a sign
that said phones must be off in the court rooms. You could have them
with you, they just had to be off.

The last time I had jury duty was 1982. There wasn't much to restrict
back then. We didn't even have to walk through metal detectors,
either. You only did that at the airport.;-)

I visited my father in the hospital several times this week. They have
signs all over the place saying "NO CELLULAR PHONES". One day, the room
phone wasn't working, so he used his cell phone (Cingular TDMA) to call me.
On the day he left, someone called me on mine while I was there. Nobody
ever said anything about it.

Phones only cause limited problems with limited equipment. They
aren't the problems some hospitals make them out to be. I mean,
there's a cell tower across the street from most hospitals here.

Just for fun, and in an act of nonviolent resistance, I changed the
banner on my phone to say "Phone is off". When I was challenged upon
entering the hospital (I was just going to the offices on the side to
pay a bill), I showed the "guard" the phone, she read the screen, and
thanked me for my "compliance".
