Laptop screen just went DARK!

Using a HP Pavilion n5270 laptop, PIII 700, 384k RAM, WinXP Pro..
The screen went dark -- too dark to see -- when it went into hybernate mode.
This has happened a few times in the past but it always came back after a
couple times of rebooting. It hasn't come back this time. Everything else
about the system is running fine. I'm writing this on the machine because
I'm using a desktop monitor attached to it. It went out of waranty a few
months ago. Is there a reasonable fix for this problem? Does it require a
new screen? Is it even possible to replace a screen?
