FPS issues with MW2 multiplayer

After finishing MW2 single player on the highest video settings now I'm struggling at playing the multiplayer version. Basically what happens is my pc usage goes up to 80% and the fps drop down to 5-10 making it impossible to play. I used to play mw2 a while back with no problems.
