I am contemplating upgrading a server from P4 to Dual Xeon but am unsure if I will have to re-format the hard drives from my P4 server (as I had to do when upgrading from P3 to P4). Can anyone answer this question. I am running 2000 Server with Terminal Services.

You will surely have to reformat everything since you change the motherboard.

SUGGESTION : Buy a DUAL-OPTERON server, Opteron are faster than XEON and they are 64bit ready. Read this review : http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2004q2/opteron-x50/

I didn't have to format when I went from PIII to P4, I just did a repair install.

You're right about the dual Opteron, but the article you provided is a little odd. Even they admit that only one CPU can use it's On-Die Memory Controller. Dual Xeon might be better then P4EE(says Tom), but Dual Opteron w/ NUMA aware OS and a non-faulty mobo are way better.

I think this memory controller issue is a motherboard issue. I think they used a Dual Opteron board that only have a memory interface for 1 socket... It's what I have understand from the article.
