Exactly what is the prerequisite on a motherboard for getting a mobile Barton to work on a motherboard… I read a 100+ posts on one working good with my NF7-S before I bought one, but what exactly is it...

I have a friend on the cheap side that wants to get some more life out of his 512MB of PC133 ram, so I am hunting for a quality AMD board ~$50 that has slots for both 168 and 184 pin ram… but I do not want to get him a locked athlon cpu… down the road when he gets a new motherboard and new ram, I would like to be able to take the cpu he gets now and bump the fsp up to 200… and that sounds like a mobile barton to me…

but what do I need to look for in a motherboard...

You can't run pc133 with a mobile barton. You'll need at least pc2700; preferably pc3200 to run at 200 fsb. You might get your barton to post underclocked, but not at full speed with that memory.

If it is just because of the 133fsb, then you can run a barton at 133fsb... and the mobile even comes that way... but does a barton require ddr ram? I have not heard this...

but my question was about chipset issues...

The ECS K7S5A is fairly highly thought of (It's a bit old, but of the boards supporting both DDR and SDR it's good), and one of the more recent BIOS updates allow it to support up to the 2600+, and I suspect that's because the 2600+ was the fastest XP available on the 133FSB.

That is of course a T-bred 2600+ not the Barton, but I reckon it should work, although I have no idea whether that board will allow multiplier adjustments or not.

Seems a shame to pair such a great chip with PC133, but each to their own I guess

With $50 on that board now, it could get him by for a while... then he can put $200 toward a good board and some pc3200 ram later... but that is why I want him to get a mobile barton... it would be future proof... it would be a waste getting a locked 2400...

newegg does not have the K7S5A in stock anymore... I actually looked for it yesterday...
