Hi all, I am building a new pc, woohoo! However I'm not sure about the mobo. This is what I am thinking of:

Abit KV8 K8T800 (OR) MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 1meg L2 cache
Kingston 1x512 DDR400 PC3200 RAM
Seagate Barracuda 80Gb HD 7200 rpm

I already have a RADEON 9800 PRO 128Mb graphics card, case and PSU.

I realise that this is all socket 754 based but I really cant afford the anything in the socket 939 range, and there isn't much of a selection of mobo's here in the UK yet for S939.
I want to be able to play games like HL2 and Far Cry etc. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks in advance. :)

Radeon 9800 Pro IceQ 128MB
AMD Athlon XP 1800
512 SDRAM
Shuttle AK32 Mainboard
Win XP

Foxconn offers an inexpensive SiS755 chipset board, which is a superior chipset. Or if you want a good board, consider MSI's K8N line.

imho the 3400+ is pretty steeply priced..the 3200+ is about $130 less and comes in a 1mb l2 cache (clawhammer) version if you can still find it. I *believe* it can be overclocked to 3400+ speed with stock cooling. At least that is what I plan to do after I get mine and "break it in" at stock speed during the hot months of summer. I am a noobie so get a second opinion...just a thought.

personally $285 seemed like the absolute max I could comprehend spending on a processor. I mean for that I could buy a decent processor, mobo and memory if I went a less expensive route.

On the other hand if I were going to spend $130 more to get the 3400+ I think I would add another $70 and get the 3500+ for 939. It doesn't perform all that much better than 3400+ but I believe it does generally outperform it.

Only one 939 mobo out around here last time I checked though. Sort of limits the choices.
