AMD Mobo Recommendation

I am about to replace my PC and I am planning to order a new one by the part. I am planning to use an Athlon XP CPU probably, but I am a bit stuck as to what mobo to use. I am located in Israel, and it seems that most (if not all) major manufacturers are available here.

This retailer was recommended to me by a friend and this is their mobo page:

http://www.pandas.co.il/default.php?cPath=609_270

I am a programmer, a lot of HTML, CSS and JS, but I also do some VB, which requires compiling. I do zero gaming and my graphics needs are fairly simple. I do plan to again get a dual-head graphics card, but a simple one, ATI or nVidia. I was recommended to get a mobo with RAID and also to not rely on an onboard ethernet connection--NIC cards are cheap.

I have here a small LAN and an aDSL connection. I am not certain why a separate NIC card is necessary, but I suppose that as a backup it might make sense--without my internet connection, I am completely unable to work.

Any recommendations for a mobo are appreciated.

Thank you,
Hershel Robinson

The "classic" MB for Athlon XP system is the ABIT NF7 or NF7-S if you want high quality audio.

But, why don't you get an Athlon 64? It don't fit your budget?

Why not Athlon 64? I have no idea. Well at nearly 3 times the price, yes, it is probably out of my budget. I actually only know a little about CPUs actually. Not enough to know the difference. Don't forget I run Win 2K. I may upgrade to XP one day.

Great audio I don't need. Even good audio I don't need. This is a business machine, nothing more--I don't use it for games, for videos, for DVDs, for music--just for programming really.

Pandas CPU page is here:

My suggestion for a CPU was just that--an idea. But, uh, this isn't the CPU forum, now is it? :)

Thanks,
Hershel

It's just that an AMD Athlon 64 based system will last longer. You can buy a low-end Athlon 64 2800+ with 512Megs of RAM (enough for pragamming in most case) and it will be faster than a Athlon XP 3200+ based PC.

And you will be able to upgrade to a faster CPU later and/or Windowx 64bit later.

By the way, Athlon 64 are 100% compatible with Windows 9x and Windows 2000.

If you still plan to buy an Athlon XP, get a Barton 2500+ with an ABIT NF7. Get DDR400 ram to. And overclock your beast to 3200+ in BIOS only!

Get an Athlon 64 2800+, if you can. For Athlon64, MSI K8N Neo Platium or FISR is the mobo to buy.

For AXP systems, ABIT NF7 or NF7-S is the mobo to get. With 400+, you can build the price/performace system. AXP 2400+ doesn't need DDR400 and clocked higher than Barton AXPs by default.

Nvidia onboard NIC is very good, so no need to spend extra for discrete NIC card
