Hi all,

I was wondering if my mobo (KT266A) supported XP2400+ THOROUGHBRED. I have a XP1600+ at the moment and i'm trying to run doom3 (Vid card9800PRO) but i'm not getting smooth frame rates. Basically i'm wondering if upgrading to a XP2400+ is possible and will it be worth it? Thanx in advance.

AFAIK it should work (<i>might</i> need a BIOS update), but I personally would replace the motherboard rather than the chip. Overclocking your existing chip in an nforce2 mobo will probably give you better overall performance than simply sticking a 2400+ in your current board. Even though I think your CPU must be a Palomino core (AFAIK the slowest t-breds were 1700+ chips), you should still be able to get 1.6-1.7Ghz out of it before you start needing better cooling.

ChipDeath,

Thanks for the suggestion ChipDeath. Lets just say overclocking was my friend until 2HDs blew up on me (i'm guessing from PCI overclocking). I'm looking to improve performance in a stable manner if will. My CPU is a Palomino core and it's getting a bit old i guess 2 1/2 years. Just wondering if 2400+ or 2600+ (if i can still find one) is worth the upgrade for Doom 3. Sigh.. it's an endless cycle.

Hence the suggestion to get an nforce2 mobo. The chipset allows locking of the AGP/PCI bus, so you have completely free reign over the FSB and don't have to worry about it!

If you can get hold of a 2400+ cheap, then maybe give it a go. I just think you'll see a greater improvement from replacing the board rather than the CPU. Although it would be much more effort, and probably slightly more expensive.

ooh i didn't know there was a mobo for socket A which enabled AGP/PCI bus locking. Nice one. There is a problem though, if i decide to go down that path, yes i would get better performance (i can see you've done well for yourself) but since i can only up the system bus, i would most likely need to buy new memory sticks (mine are only rated @ DDR266 not DDR400). I've decided to go the route of buying a new CPU, because it's probably the cheapest option I've got for a performance upgrade (unless there's something i'm missing). Thanks for your prompt reply.

I would get a 2400+ instead of a new chipset, 2400 is not expensive now, then I'll save money and go for a whole new system later, since u got a 1600+ palomino, it's not going to overclock too far, and ur DDR266 is limited you from overclocking at same time
However i'm not saying getting a new chipset is a bad idea, it's just if u want to save money, I think a 2400+ should be ok, there is a good 600MHz difference between 1600+ and 2400+.
But that's my opinion anyway..so don't get pissed ChipDeath

The extra performance from (nForce2 + overclocking) is not good enough to justify the cost of a new mobo.

I recommend getting 2400+

Thanks for your replies,

Spitfire_x86: "I recommend getting 2400+"

This brings me back to my original question... Does my mobo support the 2400+? It has the KT266A chipset, I just wanted to be sure before I went gunho and bought the CPU only to find out my mobo doesn't support it :( That's why I wanted to make sure.

It does, KT266A supports all the Athlon XP with 266FSB, u might want to check the the website to see if any BIOS update is necessary

It should work.

All you need is 15x multiplier and 1.65v support. I think your mobo can provide it, at least with latest bios.

No worries mate...
It's just he's talking about DoomIII, and AFAIK it's not <i>that</i> heavy on the Physics & AI (i.e. stuff the CPU's doing), but it <i>does</i> like lots of memory bandwidth, and with a little Vdimm Increase I suspect he'll hit the Limit of the CPU before the RAM. Although it could be a bit hit 'n' miss, depending on the RAM.. I have some Crucial PC2100 that does 175Mhz, cas 2.5 without any extra volts, so if his ram was as good he'd not do too bad.

Like I said to him - it's certainly easier and cheaper to just upgrade the CPU, but I <i>personally</i> would swap the mobo.. Plus I don't like VIA chipsets (personal experience, although I don't <i>hate</i> them as deeply as crashman..), so I'm probably Biased against sticking with one.

OMG, your Crucial PC2100 does 175Mhz??
hm..I wonder how far my Crucial PC2700 can go..can it do 200Mhz?

heh..at least he owns a VIA KT266A..not <i>that bad</i>
