I recently built a new computer for a friend with an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe and a 80GB SATA HDD. It refuses to see the drive in post. It WILL, however, notice it in the raid utility screen. Anyway, I've seen this problem in other forums and the answer was always to coppy the SATA drivers to a floppy and hit F6 during Windows install. This will allow you to install the sata drivers and everyone goes home happy. Well, not me. Windows install does NOTHING when I hit F6. I've tried several times and nothing happens! Anybody have an idea why it won't do anything when I hit F6? Yes, the key works on my keyboard.

When you hit f6, it will continue to install as usual and ask you later to put the floppy in to install drivers. So, start the installation, hit f6 and let the installation go.

-Always put the blame on you first, then on the hardware !!!

1.) The onboard SATA controller is actually a PCI device, it has it's own BIOS. So you're supposed to see that drive in the RAID utility stuff, not POST.
2.) When you hit F6, Windows Settup continues for a while until it loads all other drivers, then usually ask which driver you want to load from the floppy.
3.) Make sure your RAID controller is set as one of the boot devices in BIOS.

If you just have one drive there is no need to load the RAID drivers. XP has everything it needs for that.

OK, I will be patient with the installation and see what happens. I also didn't know to have a RAID device as a boot option. Wish me luck and I'll return with the results!

Huzzah! Success! Thanks guys. The confusing part was that in my mobo bios, I have to have SCSI as a boot device. I don't even have the option for RAID. Also, does anyone know how to turn off checking for RAID during boot? I'd just like to shave off the 7-8 seconds it takes to verify it. I can't see anything in the bios to disable RAID. Do I need to keep the RAID function enabled for the SATA to work?

no, you only need the raid drivers if you're using multiple sata drives; you should uninstall the raid drivers to save the search during boot.
