Hi
I'm currently looking into upgrading my system.
I'm confused as to which socket to choose. Between the socket939 or socket754.
I do care about PCIexpress but NOT that much since nvidia 6series will be based on agp for a few more years.
For socket754 I plan to get a A64 3000+ or 3200+, but can someone point me to a nice board with stability and game performance in mind (It doesn't need to be a OC monster).
One of the feautures i want is built in firewire.

And as far as the socket939 goes, i think the only difference it has with socket754 is dual vs single channel memory. Is that gonna be a performance boost or is the memory controller on a64s enough? Will 939 become more popular or is 754 gonna be more mainstream?

Thanks in advance.

You may want to wait a bit, but I would go socket 939 if you've got the dough. The 754 platforms will become the "value, Sempron" platforms in the future.

Abit IS7 - 2.8C @ 3.4 - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - THAT'S MORE LIKE IT!

socket 754 or whatever it is is actually slower than the 939 because 754 requires special registered memory which adds memory latency, with socket 939 you lose the latency plus you can use any none registered memory saving you money I would say the best board right now is the msi k8n neo platinum 2 it also has the nvidia nforce chipset.I have the gigabyte socket 939 mobo and am having compatabilty problems with corsair memory i like the asus a8v deluxe but like everyone else i was weary of buying that board because of the via chipset so i chose the gigabyte mobo, however it seems in all the reviews the msi is the top board for speed ,oc,and features at the current time.

Actually shaido7, that isn't correct. Socket 754 does not require registered memory, that is socket 940.

as far as single and dual im not sure what the 754 offers as far as dual channel but i know the msi board is a dual channel motherboardas well as these other socket 939 mobos and 939 will be mainstream if you dont like the msi board i would go with the asus a8v deluxe or the gigabyte socket 939 mobo.

There is no 754 board with dual-channel. However, this means little to an A64. It's the other developments in socket 939 that will leave socket 754 behind in the future. 939 is only about 10% faster now. (maybe)
