Oblivion and morrowind major lag

8 gigs of ram
ati radeon 5870
I can run crysis on very high without any problems but I can't even run the character creation screen in these 2 games?
I downloaded from steam and steam says that at least oblivion files have been fully verified.

morrowind sucks. how can you spend your whole life playing it get a life.
