I plan on purchasing a A64 3400 and the Asus K8N-E board and i have a quick question. On newegg they have the A64 3400's running at 2.4 w/ 512k L2 (NewCastle core), and a "notebook" version that runs at 2.2 w/ 1mb L2 (Clawhammer core). My question is... is it possible to run the notebook version in a desktop mobo to take advantage of the L2 and just OC it to 2.4 or just stick with the 3400 for desktop??

The asus board might work fine with them, but I see no real advantage to using a cpu that's crippled with lower speed to begin with. They don't overclock as well as the mobile xp's. You pay more for them and don't get a 3 year warranty.

The A64s seem to loose OC headroom without the heat spreader. Stick with the newcastle, or get a standard clawhammer core, if you can find one.
