Network Desription: Linksys hub/router; one PC with WinXP Pro; second PC with Win98; Cat 5e cabling.
Problem: I cannot access a printer or any files on my Win98 PC (from my WinXP PC). I can access a printer and files on my WinXP PC fine (from my Win98 PC).
Can someone walk me thru how to configure my Win98 PC so I can share files and my printer?
On my Win98 PC, I've tried C/Sharing/Adding the "World", but I still can't see any files from my WinXP PC. When I try to allow access on the Win98 PC, I see the "World" and then a head icon. Trying to click the head gives me nothing. How do I specify that I want to allow access to my WinXP PC? What is the "World?" I've tried visiting Microsoft's web page and they describe setting up a Win98 SE network for file sharing, but not Win98.
When I boot up my Win98 PC, am I supposed to add a password? Will this make a difference?
I can see the Win98 computer in my network. When I try clicking it from my WinXP PC, it says something like contacting the network administrator for permission. I can only share and pass files one way for some reason.
I have no idea as to how (on the Win98 PC) I allow the WinXP PC permission to view and share my files. I also tried sharing the printer, but it asks for a name of the WinXP computer in the format, \\name\name1\. I tried putting in the network domain name, then the computer name, and other combinations but it did not recognize it.
Are there any references on networking and sharing files using Win98 (not Win98SE)?
Thanks for the posts. It turned out the problem was not clicking the Share Level on the Access Control tab in configuring the Client for Microsoft Networks.
I'm happy to finally report that my home network is fully functional. Thanks all for the help.
