I want to make a computer for my grandson to play kindergarten type games, like what they have a McDonald's -
looks to me like pac-man type. I made my last PIII system two years ago with a 440bx and I am way obsolete - what do I need to read up on now? After a little bit of looking around, I was thinking the P4 celeron 478 type might be ok, but, I'll listen to any replies. There will be NO internet connection, and nothing else on it but pre-schooler type games for 4-5 year olds. Thanks, Littleberry

hello littleberry;

Your current p3 system is more then enough to play those games, dont even bother building a new computer just for that. if you want to buy a new computer buy one for yourself and give the old one to the grandchild.

I second that, and if you really need to/want to build a new system look for the absolutely cheapest solution you can find. Maybe even something preassembled. It all depends on the OS you wille be using. If its windows XP then it is of course recommended to have 256 mb of ram, thats about it.

ASUS P4P800S-X
P IV 2,4 @ nothing caus this board doesn't OC for [-peep-]
2x512MB Corsair pc4000
120 maxtor SATA
Sapphire Radeon 9800pro 128mb

Your P3 system is good enough for the kids

PIII is great for that, BX is solid chipset. If the system is dragging, perhaps a reload or a slightly faster processor. If you're moving to XP, make sure you have 512MB of RAM. It will have pleanty of power for their applications.

I would check to see what my grandson was playing. My neibours kid loves the latest racecar games. He's great at them. He'll be in kintergarten next year. He would much rather play on an A64 with a 9600pro, than on his xp1800, with the mx graphics card.

Help me out here, Endyen, what is an A64? I myself was wondering about racing and maybe flight sims, but, he is only 4 1/2 years old, so, I didn't know. The PC at his pre-kindergarten has animals that you click and then they make their natural sounds, along with other related but primitave things like that. Does your neighbor's child have a simulation-wheel and gas pedal? I wonder what those things cost? I've got to think about this because I really am currently satisfied MYSELF with my 440bx for my own use,
so, if a pure PC game machine for him would be better - maybe I should look into that. Is the A64 one of those new $800 64 bit amd chips? That seems a bit pricey - huh? littleberry

An A64 is indeed one of the pricey $800 Amd chips. It is also one of the less pricey $200 chips, or even http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-452&depa=0 His dad got him a wheel and pedal at a swap meet, but he doesn't like it. Dad does.

Your 4½ year old kid doesn't even need a $200 CPU. If you're looking for a new system, then following parts are more than enough.

Athlon XP 2400+ (retail)
ABIT NF7-M
Onboard GeForce4 MX and sound
2 x 256 MB Kingston Value RAM PC2700 CL2.5 (1 x 256 MB will be fine, if don't want to use windows XP)

Onboard GeFocrce4 MX is not bad, especially for kids. And you always have option add a better graphics card.

Reload windows, upgrade your memory if needed, and let him use the P3.

Any 4 year old that is bitching about a slow computer can go outside and climb trees like normal kids.

Even if you wanted to spend $500, I just don't see the value in it. He's 4.

Sheesh times must have really changed. I wouldn't want my kids even using a computer at 4. They should be outside playing or inside reading or being read to.

I let my kid use my OWN PC since he was 3, heh, 4 years later he is typing 3 layouts and 2 languages (slowly though, fingers too little still;) and for some reason still plays his kindergarten games besides racing ones.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

I am setting up my old 440bx for him now, but, I am building the p4 that Fry's had on sale for myself which is turning out to be troublesome with the cpu overheating and all. I think this old 550 mhz p3 will be all he needs for some time. littleberry
