Hello,
I have a fairly new eMachines T2642, running Windows XP Home SP1, and
it had an open IDE slot on the secondary IDE controller bus. I tried
to install an HP DVD630i writer there, and I tried it many ways - I set
jumpers to master, slave, or cable select, and made sure the settings
were compatible with the other CD drive on the bus with it. No luck.
The DVD drive would either be recognized as a different model and
manufacturer of CD drive, and I could read CDs there, but I could not
read DVDs there. Either this would happen, or the system would not
recognize the drive at all. Once I tried installing driver software on
before the drive was there, once I did it after. It just didn't
matter. Each and every time I'd attempt to install, I'd get the
message:
"An HP drive could not be detected on your system"
I had HP on the phone with me at least four times, and after half a
day, I gave up, and returned the drive to Walmart.
Just so I know - has anyone else tried to do this? Were you able to
get anywhere with it?
Guess I'll start looking for a USB-based DVD writer now.
