Hi !
..
I have a IBM T30 (W2K Pro)
with a "Cisco Systems PCI Wireless LAN Adapter", a MPCI that pertains to
"Aironet 350 Family" (as far as I know)
but no Access Point availabe (today, or this week).
..
How can I know if the Wifi card has "WEP" enabled ?
W2K Device Manager says Driver version is 3.8.26.0 ... (CLNSX500.DLL)
..
Thanks. Sebastian.

You could check the manual, do a Google search, go to the company's website.

Well, if you're not connected to anything wireless, you don't need
WEP, on or off. Also, if this is an IBM issued laptop, you may not
have administrator rights on the laptop, which will prevent you from
changing or even inspecting some settings. If so, contact you IBM
internal support people.

Control Panel -> Network -> Wireless Device
Right click on the Wireless Device icon and select Properties.
Highlight the line with TCP/IP and select Properties.
That should bring you to the configuration page(s) for your wireless
network card. If not, then you may have an icon for Wireless
Configuration in the Control Panel, or an application under:
Start -> Programs -> Cisco -> Wireless something or other.
There may also be an icon in the system tray (lower right of screen)
that is some kind of Wireless Configuration utility. Lots of places
to look.

Thanks Allan, but ...
..
a) no manual is available, just the ThinkPad ...
b) Google - in this situation , I think "Groups" is better than the
"Web" ... I types "WEP" into Google and lots of noise came ...
c) our website is ... infinite !

Hi, Jeff !
..
I do not have an Access Point right now, but I had last week (and did
not connect, just went "Associated" ), and will have it again next
week.
And I do have Admin rights, as far as I know (can install lots of soft
....
..
But tonite all I have is the T30.
..
The TCP/IP Properties of the card are the usual ones : automatic IP
and DNS, nothing in "Advanced" einther.
..
I did install "Cisco ACU" (Aironet Client Utility), but see nothing
related to WEP there ... that is active. This utility goes into the
rigth bottom corner ...
..
There is a menu within ACU saying :
..
"Data Encryption Type = None"
"Authentication Type = Open"
"Bradcast Encryption Type = None"
"WPA Authentication = None"
..
Where do those values come from ?
Guess the Registry ...
..
Thanks for your time. Sebastian.

On my Thinkpad (and I suspect most computers) you can check this a
couple of ways: the Network Connections shortcut for the LAN
connection will display the wifi config in the options tab. Similar
info can be had by clicking on the wifi icon in the system tray (mine
is red when no wifi is near, yellow when the signal is weak, green
when the signal is good. The Encryption tab will have the info.
Most HotsSpots have encryption disabled since you'd have to
distribute the key to anyone using it which defeats the purpose.

The AP will tell the adapter whether to use WEP or not,, depending on the
AP configuration. If wep is used
then the card has to have it enabled and the wep keys must match.

Access Point wil select to use WEP or not ?
..
In that case I would suspect the opposite :
I would say the AP is saying "no, dont use WEP",
but my ThinkPad has "WEP mandatory".
..
Is this configuration possible ?
..
How can I verify that T30 WiFi card has "WEP mandatory" ?
..
Cheers. Sebastian.
