I just bought a brand new MSI 865PE NEO-2 Platinum edition and a intel p4 3ghz 800mhzfsb 1mb of cache

The thing is... once in a while my pc just keeps rebooting for no reason, and when i play games it sometimes takes like 5 minutes and it reboots. I tried removing the cover of my comp and put an extra fan and my CPU is at 50 degrees celcius when i play games, with the extra fan...

The weird thing is, I get some kind of blue screen of the death when it happens... could this be an overheating problem? anyone know

by the way, with the case open an no gaming it's at 35 degrees for both the cpu and case... but it's weird because i don't think it's my vid card since it's a brand new ati 9600XT

Check your event viewer, see if it'll tell you what error your getting. Also, I don't remember exactly how, but there is a way to stop your computer from atuomatically rebooting. If you can change this, you would be able to read your BSOD and it'll give you a better idea of whats wrong.

Sounds like either PSU or RAM related. What make and what are the ratings of your PSU? Also, download and run <A HREF="http://www.memtest86.com" target="_new">MemTest86</A> and test your RAM one stick at a time. If you get ANY errors, RMA that stick.

That depends on what OS your using. I'm not sure if XP Home has an event viewer, 2000 Pro and XP Pro do.

For Windows XP Pro, you can find it under Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer.
I believe it is the same for 2000 as well.

Try checking the links, see if they give you any ideas as to whats happening. Also try searching the microsoft knowledgebase, there may be info in there as well.

Have you tested the memory yet? That would be the first place to look.

Also, what are the actual ratings of your PSU? The label on the side will them listed... 3.3V, 5V, 12V. What are the amp rating for those voltages. Also, what make is it?

it says +3.3 +5 +12 on the side and it's a 450W okia psu

i checked the links and
Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 1003
Source: System Error
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: ER_KRNLCRASH_LOG
Message: Error code %1, parameter1 %2, parameter2 %3, parameter3 %4, parameter4 %5.

Explanation
A blue screen (Stop error) was reported. The message contains details about the error. A matching event with Event ID 1001 might also appear in the event log. This matching event displays information about the specific error that occurred.

i tried testing the memory read / write / latency on Everest Home Edition and it didn't give any errors, i don't know how to make mem86 work so :/

this is a software problem if you ask me. Did you reinstall your os from scratch?

looks like you need to update your OS and drivers to their latest versions, starting with XP's SP2, Intel platform drivers and catalyst 4.10.

snotling brings up a good point. Did you do a clean install of your OS when you put the new mobo/cpu in?

By looking at the error code, it looks like a software issue, not hardware. If you didn't do a fresh install, and don't want to do one if you don't have to, you can try working around it by going in device manager and uninstalling all the system devices, then rebooting and letting the computer find them and install the correct drivers from the CD you got with your mobo.

If you do this and are still having problems, a fresh install is the way to go.

Rememeber to backup your data before you do anything, just in case.

<A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;834450" target="_new">Here</A> is the closest I could find searching the knowledgebase.

I would suggest doing a format and reinstall of windows, install all updates EXCEPT for SP2. See if the problem continues. If it does, THEN install SP2, see if it helps.

Sorry, thats about the best I can do for you. Hope you get it figured out. Keep us posted, let us know if you fix it.

if connected to broadband, unpatched and unprotected by a firewall, a new windows XP or 2k install takes about 15 minutes to be infected by worms such as "blaster"

it was only ONE of many answers Google offered feel free to look up the others!

Have the exact same problem myself. I don't belive it's sw related (inc viruses). Prob. the memory. You said it's old. So I guess you have used in different mb's. Maybe you got some static on it. Components are protected against static but only the first time. The next time they are fried. 1 thing to try is to take out the memory and lay the pins against a metal surface to discarge any static build up. It has actually worked for me once. I havn't have the time to check my comp yet, but I tell you if I find a (different) solution
