im trying to buy some switches for work. problem is, i dont know what type. right now, we have 10mbps hubs. the patch panel connects directly to them. should the replacements be "core" or "desktop/workstation" switches?

you want workstation switches, where are you getting this info that it didnt explain the difference between core and workstation? core is for main backbones.

you want ethernet switches, where are you getting this info that it didnt explain the difference between core and workstation? core is for main backbones. ive never heard of switches refered to as workstation switches, they are just ethernet switches. maybe they were talking about the switch boxes that switch between computers and use the same monitor, mouse and keyboard.

i went onto the cisco and 3comm sites and tried the product wizards. one of the questions you have to answer is whether the switches are core (backbone) or workstation. i dont know how to differentiate between the two b/c i am new to this. i looked for explinations but didnt really understand. it basically just said "connected to backbone" and i dont know what that means. i also dont know whether i should go with modular or stackable switches. the hubs that are in place are stacked ontop of eachother sooooo.....

i found some netgear FS524 24 port 10/100 switches for $279. there are "stackable" ones for $589.... they both seem pretty good, but why would one be stackable and one not? and why would i pay an extra $300 just to stack something? the others cant be stacked?

it has to do with how the switch is made, non stackable usualy doesnt have a fan because the heat can just disperse through the top, stackable is designed with a fan out the back and usually is thinner. they also have the hardware attatched to mount them to a rack. those switches will do you just fine.
