This is my spec,
P4 630 3.0ghz HT
2G Corsair 800mhz ram
Maxtor 80G win Xp pro
Seagate Barracuda 1000G Win 7 Ulti
Msi 4870 512 OC
CM Gx-550

My Dirt 2 have a damn bug problems.....
It cant really run on it?
Why??
There is so many people using P4 and recent video card to run it, and get 10 to 30 FPS
I need 30 min to load to the main menu....
What is the problems???
Anyone can help??
BTW i can play Prototype, Far cry 2@ 7FPS(avg), L4d2, Fifa 2010, assassin's creed 2, and also Fall out 3...
Anyone ???
i know my P4 is bottleneck but why people can do it, but not me??

According to this test: http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,700780/Dirt-2-CPU-be... Dirt 2 requires at least a dual core to run and benefits from having more cores/better processor.

My stepson plays it perfectly well at 1600x1200 on max with a Q6600 @ 3GHz and a 512MB 4870, so you're absolutely right that your CPU is the thing holding you back as that GPU should be fine.

Your CPU is right on the minimum requirement for the game, so I would expect you to be able to run it, but not to hit playable FPS all the time, which is what you're seeing. Do you actually know anyone who is able to run the game with a P4 (as you state at the end) or have a link to someone saying they are playing it better than you with one?

Seeing as you are stubbornly rooting for your CPU, you might as well try that. Don't expect an exponential leap in performance, though ...

I stand corrected - thanks for getting back with the links. I'd agree with ksampanna that trying the latest drivers from ATI/AMD's siet is ALWAYS worth a try - don't rely on graphics card manufacturers to add their name and pass on the drivers. I didn't think the game would work on a P4 but either I'm wrong or lots of people lied, my money's on me being wrong!

If updating the graphics drivers doesn't have the impact you're hoping for, you might be forced to start trawling your running processes to strip out everything non-essential to the game and see if that frees up enough CPU to give you some more FPS.

Good luck mate.

Sorry, i knew it before i install the game...
Is just want to know why people P4 can get a playable fps with a lower video cards than me like 9400,9500, HD2000 or Hd4650....
Just want to know how far that my P4 can go?
I can play some of the new game also, so why not dirt 2?
PS: I play Far cry 2 @ avg 7 FPS, not in all high setting... but it can run...
My dirt 2 is totally cant run at all.... is something like 1FPS
It is just an old rig, dun compare with the new systems...
Maybe compare to ur rig that u build five years ago?
Can ur rig do that?
I would install another 2G of ram, DDR2-800 Corsair XMS
Seagate barracuda is my next bottlenecks? or DDR2-800?
Plan to build a new rig but i will stil keep my old rig

Sorry i know my p4 is bottleneck...
U read the tread?
I state it at the early stage ok!!!
Just want to know is there any diff for the driver only....
I got my ans and it proved... From less than 1FPS to 47 avg FPS...
This is the ans that i want to find out...
Then what will u suggest for my P4 video card?
Lower end one?
Intend to build a I7 or amd x6 rig soon.... (Dun think that i will use the 4870 for new rig... Will get fermi for new rig...)
Want to tell those who are playing Dirt2 with Ati driver, pls update ur driver to get better frame rate... It does help :)

You never stated it was a bottleneck.

Ummm... First post in the thread? Last line states that he knows the P4 is a bottleneck

The thread wasn't about whether or not the P4 was bottlenecking the 4870, that was a given from the start. The thread was asking why others with a P4 and lesser cards were running the game better than the OP. The solution turned out to be updating the graphics drivers from the latest one from the graphics card manufacturer to the latest generic ones from AMD - which was suggested by a couple of people early on.

If I may make a suggestion zipzoonflyhigl - take a few minutes to calm down and then read the thread again carefully before you post again as you're looking a little like you've grabbed the wrong end of the stick at the moment and are desperately trying to beat lee-turbo over the head with it!

Thanks guy :)
Sorry, i didnt know that updating the driver is so important... after i got my P4 rig is update...... then i know :)
Thanks anyway
btw there is a lot of people who dun update their driver, they think that is not necessary to update when there is not other issue or problems with the rig...
BTW my P4 rig is in malaysia...
Using kind of dial up speed which i dun want to use....(115kbps)
SO is pretty hard for me to keep updating all the driver....
This is the main thing which make me dun update constantly
Anyway, suggestion for P4 video card?
