i know this topic has probably been covered a MILLION times here, but i want to know is it simple enough to change your motherboard?
I have added various/change various other components (extra hd, chanded dvd-rw, fan controllers) and know my way about the inside of a pc.
However, is it as simple as just putting in a new board, all the other parts (hd, drives) then switching on with motherboards driver cd in?
sorry for the dumb question, but we all have to start somewhere

Almost.

Just before shutting down, uninstall the mobo drivers and go into devices and remove all the mobo devices, then shut down and swap.

Lots of people recommend a reformat/reinstall for this just to eliminate the potential for problems. I don't know - I don't upgrade piecemeal like that usually.
