Well, obviously I have a Abit IC7 Max 3, and for some reason the northbridge fan makes a wierd verrrrrrr noise whenever I boot up my comp, and continues to verrrr as long as the comp is on. But it only does it if I leave my comp off for overnight or longer, if its off for an hour or so it doesn't make the noise. The only way so far that was getting rid of the noise was to turn off my comp and then on until it didn't make the noise. I didn't know if this was common, or even a problem at all, or just a really annoying noise that doesn't hurt anything. My friend told me to grease it, and I wasnt too sure about that...ha. And other people tell me to replace it, but I don't even know where to get a fan to replace it with.

Just because im a hardware newb, doesn't mean I cant break things with a hammer.

It's pretty common on the abit boards that the northbridgefan starts grinding or simply dies after a year or so. Zalman, amongst a zillion others, made a fanless heatsink for the northbridge, it's cheap and supposed to be pretty good.

there is anothe solution, I had the same problem. If your lucky it is simply crappy bushing oil they use on the shaft of the fan. Simply unscrew the fan from its mount, only 3 screws, take the sticker off of the back of the fan, drop a few drops of Bushing oil either from a hobby shop or you can pick up machine oil from your local hardware store. It fixed the problem with mine, hasn't done it since. And if you really wan to, you could run without a fan if you don't oc, but if you OC then get a new heatsink if this doesn't solve the problem.
