Have I missed something: seems that the updated customer agreement states
that both my phone number & name may be displayed on someones caller ID, or
is this just wishful/future technology at its best. dr

It's been there all along; it's the standard for Caller ID, and in any
way unique to Verizon Wireless.
Oh, and as with most, if not all, other phones and carriers, there is
this part:
'You can block this "Caller ID" for most calls by dialing *67 before
each call, or by ordering per-line call blocking (dialing *82 to
unblock) where it's available.'

But VZW and most or all other wireless companies choose not to pass along
names with caller-id info, as a cost issue.
To answer dr. w., my guess is that they are reserving their right to do so,
but the fact that they're reserving that right doesn't necessarily mean
they're going to start doing it anytime soon.

Verizon *Wireless* passEs your name? Are you sure it's not just that you're
calling another wireless phone which has your name and number programmed
into its phone book?

Yes, Verizon Wireless passes my name to landline phones.

No, Doc, not wishful thinking. It seems to vary by market and
provider. In upstate SC or western NC, VZW doesn't pass along your
name to a land line. It shows up as the city and state, along with
the number. When my sister-in-law (who has VZW in Miami, FL) calls
me, it shows her name and number, as does my mother's aunt, who has
Cingular in Columbia, SC.
In fact, I don't think the name is really "passed along" anyways. I
seem to recall a discussion in a group a while back (maybe this one)
where there was some responsibility for carriers to pay for the name
look-ups. The lookup occurs, then the number (which is passed along)
is sent along with the "looked up" name to the land line's CID
display. If a carrier doesn't pay the fee, then all you get is the
exchange city and state and the number.
Now, if the call goes to another wireless phone, all they will get is
your number. I know of no wireless carrier that sends "looked up"
names in the CID stream to the phone. Yet.

This is correct. My classic story about this is that back in '02, SBC
contracted with Sprint for database lookups, so you could call my home phone
(SBC) from my wife's phone (Sprint) and see my name (the account is in my
name, not hers). Then the two companies ended up terminating the contract
(over compensation issues IIRC) and that was no longer the case.
